At 5:30am I headed to the gym for my first workout. Some might be thinking, "Holy cow, Batman, but that is early!" Unfortunately, I go to work at 7:30am and get home around 7pm so this is really the only time I have to work out. I am used to it though after 4 years of 6am weight training and swim practice.
Moving on. Let me say that Jillian was not kidding when she said this program is for people who are in pretty good shape. To speak plainly, it kicked my ass! The exercise part of the program is made up of 5 circuits per day so that you keep moving and don't sit around between exercises. I was ready to fall down at the end of it. There is one problem I see myself having with the exercise portion of the program, though, and it has to do with the spatial arrangement of my gym. The weight room is on the first floor and the running area (with treadmills and a track) is on the second floor. This makes it pretty impossible to do some of the 1 min runs in the circuits. I am going to substitute more jumping rope and other exercises to spike my heart rate in place of the running. This might be a sin in Jillian's eyes, but sometimes there are obstacles that you just have to deal with as best as you can. Overall, the first day of working out went well. I did slack off on a few of the exercises (shame on me) and finished in about 35 minutes instead of the 45 it should take (double shame), so there is definitely room for improvement.
One big problem that I have with the program so far (I know it is only the first day) is that I cannot afford the food she recommends/requires. On my salary, fresh tuna and swordfish steaks are just not a reality. I guess it is going to be lots of chicken, but fortunately I do not have a problem with that.
As for the food part of the program, I am really hoping that my body adapts to the lack of constant snacking soon. I was basically starving all day, but no pain, no gain as they say. Who is they by the way? I have always wanted to know...
I give myself 2 out of 5 cupcakes today for the diet part of the program due to the fact that I still have to go to the store and thus my lunch and dinner meals were not on the list (but still healthy!), and I ate an oreo which is definitely not on the list of acceptable foods (uber shame). It was only one though and not 6, so the improvement is already there!
So Day 1 is finished, I still want to complete the program, and I have confidence that I can.
Day 2, here I come!
