Those of us from the 70's remember the rock band 'Three Dog
Night'. They're the band who had a
good
friend named Jeremiah who as it turned out, was a
bullfrog. (Jeremiah the Bullfrog is a blog of another sort;
I'll get to that later) As a kid in Junior High, I knew all the
words to the song about the bullfrog, but had absolutely no idea
what the song was really about, innuendo and all. As a young teen,
what intrigued me most, even more than the band's whack songs,
was the band's name. How was this esoteric name dreamed up for
the band, and just what did it mean? Well, eventually I did learn
the meaning behind 'three dog night', which I found rather
charming, and for those of you who might not know what 'three
dog night' means, I'll share with what I learned, and how
that silly band from the 70's adopted it as their moniker.
The story goes that the band's vocalist, Danny Hutton had a
girlfriend, June Fairchild, who had read a magazine article about
the indigenous Australians, the Aborigines. The article described
how on cold nights in the desert, they would sleep in a hole
embracing a Dingo, Australia's native wild dog. On colder
nights, they would sleep with two dogs, and if the night was
especially cold, they would huddle with three dogs. Hence, the
name, 'three dog night.' There you have it!
Evidently, the name ended up bringing good luck to the band. They
went on to earn 13 gold albums.
Peace to all- Sabrina
