Promise Rings?

Last week i was in class talking to some of my friends. i saw she had on a really pretty ring on. I then asked her were she got, She said that Dylan got it for her. It was his promise to her, her promise ring. So want does a promise ring really mean? Some where saying that it just meant that he loves you and other are saying that is a pre-engagement ring? So which one is it??? And if you get one then how are to know what he means when he gives it to you???
