Protesting -- Pitiable or Productive?

user

Yesterday, as I was occupying my Sunday with some book shopping, I happened to drive by a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) location. There were protestors outside it, with signs like "KFC tortures chickens" and various other claims of KFC's indecency toward animals (namely, well, chickens).

Let me start by qualifying that I am an animal rights advocate. No, I'm not with PETA, and no, I don't actively pursue my disagreements to the point of polling and protesting. But I love animals, I believe they have feelings and are individuals in every sense we are. I have seen first hand the act of love, caring and instinct inherent in the psyche of animals. So while I may not be voracious and vociferous with my pursuit of this advocacy, I empathized with the plight of these protestors.

But, uh... well, they sell fried chicken. I mean, did anybody really think they were treating chickens with nobility?

A few thoughts struck me as I watched these people, in the torrid Phoenix heat at noontime, sweating along the side of the street, waving their signs at passing cars with a wavering enthusiasm. Protesting, as I understand and firmly believe, is one of our constitutional rights. Well, at least the right to assembly. They had assembled to voice their opinion, and to hopefully persuade minds. But what good did they really hope to accomplish there? It was ONE KFC location. I think at the most, all they could really hope to accomplish there was shutting down that one location, because yeah, those signs were certainly discouraging. Which would only put a few people out of work, and increase an already deteriorating neighborhood with one more empty building. Certainly they couldn't expect the whole franchise of KFC to shut down completely?

I just wonder if protesting still has any merit anymore. I mean, rather than subject themselves to heat stroke and criticism and possibly even an embarassing run-in with the police, or worse yet, some right-wing Nazi that feels these bleeding hearts are an affront to his country that he "loves" so much, I think maybe the better course of action is to just NOT eat at KFC. Really.

Money is the only thing that really motivates our culture. Money is everything. We depend on it for every facet of our existence. It is the true power of our culture. You want to damage something, you hit 'em in their pocketbooks. And as far as reaching people, well, that's kind of what the internet is for. You can present your ideas, and maybe persuade minds, from the air-conditioned comfort of your home. I don't eat at KFC. Gave that up a while back (though I still think their biscuits and gravy are pretty damn good, no chickens killed in that, right?).

Basically, as capitalists, we vote with our dollar. That's how you really protest something these days. What you choose to financially support, is basically a reflection of your passions, your principles and your ideology. I try not to eat fast food anymore, because its essentially poison. All of it. I admire the zeal of those KFC protestors, I empathize with their compassion for living creatures, but I questioned their methods. Unless you get massive movement, like MLK's Civil Rights March, the protest basically lost its relevancy with the 60s. Times have changed, and expressions of our ethics and advocacies will have to change too.

Hi Dan, wow I agree with you on some point that yeah you do need to hit them with thier pocketbooks but I do believe that our complacency of not protesting for our rights whatever we feel it is, is what our downfall will be. I think that people just go about their lives and think oh i'll just let those people or other people do the prostesting I don't need to doing anything about it and then BAM the next thing you know more of our rights are taken away.

Now i know your just talking about KFC and no maybe those people may not have made an impact but at least they tried. I'm sure I'm not making any sense right now but read my blog and maybe it will.lol

I hope everthing is good with you I miss talking to ya,have a nice day. Peace.

I think you're absolutely right. The only thing that will really motivate KFC to change their practices in the end is the almighty dollar. Until then, however, I think the protests do serve a purpose as far as educating people to the problem. The internet is a great way to get the message out, but the problem is: if you're not looking for it, you won't find it. There are probably many people who frequent KFC who aren't even aware of KFC's history of animal cruelty. The protest hopefully brought it to their attention, and maybe some will choose to not eat at KFC anymore. That's what happened to me several years ago. My co-workers used to love KFC, so I made the lunchtime run one day and came across a protest. I went on the internet and researched it myself, and I've never been back KFC. I presented the information to my co-workers to let them make their own decision, and to my knowledge they haven't been back to KFC either. I'm an animal lover too. And though I don't always agree with PETA, I think they're right on the money with this one. What they are asking for is not at all unreasonable.

Hi Dan! I believe protests are still productive. Protests are meant to draw attention to an injustice and to generate support. Without realizing it, you proved that protests do work.

You saw the protest outside of KFC and what happened? It got your attention and prompted you to write a blog. Then what happened? Your blog started a conversation about KFC and it's inhumane practices. I wonder how many other people drove by, saw the protest and mentioned it to friends and family. How many other conversations were generated by the protest? Even though it was ONE small protest outside of ONE location, it brought attention to the issue. It was a small step, yes, but enough small steps will add up to the length of a leap.

I admire non-violent protestors, especially those willing to protest in our brain-cooking heat in Phoenix. They have strong beliefs and take action to rectify an injustice. It is easy to sit on the sofa and say, "That's wrong."

You're right, the pocketbook is the best place to hit a company. The protestors were trying to dissuade people from eating at KFC, thus, hurting KFC in the pocketbook.

You know that I'm a big-time animal lover. I won't be eating at KFC again. I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for you. You just helped the cause! LOL I really enjoy reading your blogs!

Dan, you are one insulting man for you to imply that I only read the Bible... How do you even know what my religious beliefs are? Or if I even have any? Moron.

And your right, I won't watch anything that Michael Moore produces, because he skims over the harsh realities of the TRUTH... something liberals seem to think is relative. You said government run health care would save us money... and I countered with that it won't.... We both get health care... I pay for my health care through insurance and they pay through taxes... I don't see a big difference nor savings... but what do I know, according to you I am some uneducated hick. :/

France may have a good government run health care, but they have practice when it comes to socialized programs since they have been refining it since the French Revolution... What works in France or the U.K. or Cuba or Canada (which by the way is where a dog can get a CT scan within 24 hours yet a person must wait for a week or better, don't tell me somethings not wrong with that) doesn't mean that it is going to work here... we have a population size of approximately half of ALL of Europes... We also have a more diverse demographic both economically and ethnically. We also have the highest Obesity rates (among both the insured AND uninsured). So to model Health Care reform to match a European country is ignorant at best. And it's not going to cure the problem of our rising health care costs... it's just going to be swept under the rug of "Government Run Health Insurance"... All we will be doing is going from one set of red tape to another set of red tape... And honestly, I don't like the idea of my grandparents or parents not being able to get the medication or health care they need because they are too old or too sick.... which WILL happen because it's already happening with the H1N1 flu vaccine... would you like me to post a link or am I too stupid and ignorant to do that?

Dan, I have reread my comment... and I am sorry for my harshness... I am apparently in a fiesty mood today and probably shouldn't be commenting on deeper issues.. I am sorry for calling you a moron, that is just as insulting as I claimed you were being.

I took offense at the implecation that I am stupid and uneducated (at least this is how I percieved your post).

I would also like to note that it may say Republican on my voter registration care, but I am a disenfranchised Republican and moving more towards Independant. And I would also like to note that the Democrats in office are no better than the Republicans when it comes to being in bed with coporations. Obama is a great example, seeing that GE is one of his pet companies at the moment. None of our politicians are innocent. But really, I have read bits and pieces of the 1000+ pages of the Health Care Bill in the House (H.R. 3200)... and it's not looking pretty. And don't get me wrong... there are somethings that in and of themselves would be good, like not allowing insurers to drop you because you have a chronic condition or making insurers pick you up regardless of pre-existing conditions and getting rid of that lifetime amount crap... But I truly believe there is a better way of getting this done.... The Government can't even run their other medical insurance programs well... why should I (one that has seen my mother go through the processes and hoops TriCare makes you) believe that the Government do the same for me and the other 300+ million people in this country.

Yes I love animals too. And give donations when i can to Peta. And yes, it is hard to beat Southern Fried Chicken, biscutes, gravy, potatoe salad, and fresh coconut cake with a tall glass of ice tea. If i had a chicken i'd cook it right now!

My uncle raised chickens for food, another uncle was in the cattle business for food, and I had one more uncle that raised hogs for the same purpose. They were all caring men with their herds, but the animals were for food. Nobody was allowed to make pets out of them. In those days we had what we called a smoke house, and it was some of the best eatin' that there ever was. So I can understand both sides.

I have a new post up when you get time.
