In this economic crisis, we’ve been hearing more and more of what we’re calling “recession rap,” Meaning, instead of hyping all the materialistic goods and bragging about their vacations and car collections, rappers talk about struggling to make rent and earning minimum wage. Case in point: Cam’ron’s new single, “I Hate My Job,” which makes the Harlem hustler sound more like a cubicle worker punching a time clock to make ends meet.
"I woke up late, didn't even have a shower/Lunch break? Gimme a break: A damn half an hour/All this bulls--- for 12 bucks an hour!"
Refreshing, no? Even if you love your job like I do, the relatable song strikes a chord in the same way Weird Al recently spoofed T.I.’s song “Whatever You Like” and boasted about such recession-friendly luxuries as Mickey Ds, two-ply toilet paper, stolen cable, and an endless supply of Top Ramen.
Watch the video here and tell us what you think of recession rap. Do you like its reliability or do you miss the unattainably of hip-hop songs from the past?
