Scooters

The end of this month a chapter  in my life will end. A litttle bar that I hang out at will close.Yes even though I don't drink I still hang out at smoky bars...It was just a redneck biker bar that catered to no one and everyone at the same time. You see this was a membership bar,(a leftover from the Sunday Blue laws) where you had to be a member to drink there. And if you were to much of a problem your membership would be cancelled. And I only know of a couple of times this happened. This was a bar where the working men from around North Charleston hung out.we have truckers, crane operaters, construction workers, sailors, car salesmen, and about any other trade you can think of.No this was not a hot place to pick up chicks, just  a good place to relax. It was really progressive as it had free Wi-Fi (who needs Starbucks and 3$ coffee). The owner JR had worked on my bike when he owned a motorcycle repair shop.A fair guy,but just don't srew him over. This was a place where men with names like Ski,Smoky, and Butch hung out.Where the Nascar races were on the TV on Sunday. And when the National Anthem played you were quiet and took off your hat. Many here were Veterans;there was probably over two hundred years of service between all the Vets in there. If you had too much to drink you could park your bike inside the bar til morning.Or as Butch would say his bike got tooo drunk to ride.
Scooters was a victum of greed you see the property owner would not pay for new a/c units. As the old units were 26 years old(older than some of the patrons) they just cost too much to run.JR had offered to pay for the installation if the owner bought new units( a tax deduction if he got energy efficient units) but to no avail. So Sunday August 30th Scooters will close it's doors. One door will close in my life what will the next door open to? I'll miss some of the people at Scooters as I know I'll never see them again. But that's the way life is sometimes. If you hear Kid Rock's song "All Summer Long " that Sunday think of Scooters and call up an old friend , have a drink and remember the good times.

The picture of Scooters looks exactly like the local bar in my small town. It too is a "biker" bar but everyone goes their. It is safe and has been around since the 50's.

The previous bar that I hung out and eventually worked at closed after 30 years in business. It was the stomping ground for some of most high powered sports figures and many a contract was signed in this sports bar.

Ten years after it closed I had a reunion and sent invitations out all over the country and to 6 other countries. The turn out was phenomenal. Near every person who received an invite showed.

Maybe you will be as fortunate.

    I feel your pain!

Hi, my name is Boo. I've been going to Scooters for a while (4 yrs. at least.) After my divorce the people there helped me to feel accepted again, like I still had a family, resources and support. They have been good friends to me, seeing me through so much. I don't know what would have happened had I not found that place and those people and don't even like to think about it. I'm gonna miss them all.
