If you have looked out your window any evening this week, you can't help but notice the amazing full moon that is hanging in the night sky. Indeed, this is the Harvest Moon - time to bring in the last of the tomatoes, corn and string beans from your garden.
Which brings us to this weeks' SmartTip. Whether you are a gardener or simply interested in reducing your kitchen and yard waste, composting is an excellent way to save energy and money around the home. And composting your organic waste will give you rich, nitrogen filled soil that is perfect to grow produce with.
Essentially, you are taking your waste and making free, top-of-the line fertilizer.
Think about it. If you have a garbage disposal, every time you run it to get rid of your fruit and vegetable peelings and leftovers gone bad you are using energy and water. Literally, it's all just going down the drain.
You don't need a high-dollar container to put your peels and scraps in, either. Just reuse something simple you already have in your kitchen.
Now granted, when it comes to your garbage disposal, I know you are not running it for hours on end. But, like all of our SmartTips, any way you can use less energy, spend less money, and reap an added reward like getting free, garden quality soil, you're being Energy Smart.
