SmartPower SmartTip of the Week: Give your oven some TLC

Sometimes, being Energy Smart may mean getting a little down and dirty. Take it from our friend Elizabeth in the latest SmartPower Minute.

Most of the newer models of ovens have a self-clean option.  This gives us the modern luxury of having a “clean” oven by just flicking a switch . . . and waiting a few hours.

Now, granted, that seems like it makes things pretty easy. But it’s important to know just how much it costs you, and how much energy it takes to heat your oven up to the level where it “cooks away” or vaporizes the remnants of your spilled casserole.

How much is it? Well, if you use the self-clean option on your oven, say, once a month it costs you around $40 a year.  Yep, it costs you more than a tank of gas to burn off all the gunk on the inside of your oven each year.

On top of that, the energy you use puts nearly 340 lbs. of carbon into the atmosphere each year. In other words, if all Shine readers stopped using the self-clean option on our ovens, not only would we each save $40 (in this less than stellar economy) but together we could also save millions of pounds of CO2 pollution.
And that seems like a pretty cool community effort.

So, reconsider using the self-clean, and instead just give your oven a quick wipe down when it needs it. You’ll be putting in a minor amount of human energy to save a tremendous amount of fossil fuel energy.

Be sure to read the SmartPower Blog for regular updates on the clean energy world, and more tips on how to get Energy Smart.

If you don't drive one of those gas guzzling urban assault vehicles that our american car manufacturers have slammed down our throats for the past couple of decades, it doesn't take $40 to fill your tank!! Get with it!!

Gas is about $1.70 a gallon in Colorado.

I don't drive a gas guzzling urban assault vehicle and at one point it did cost over 40 bucks for a tank of gas. Gas is at a pretty good price right now so I guess it kinda makes sense.

Are you kidding? Who on earth really cleans their oven once a month? I probably clean mine once or twice a year unless I have a big spill...

besides you have to factor in the cost to your health that comes with inhaling oven cleaner fumes.

"gas guzzling urban assault vehicle" love it. Hmm, wonder which one that could be? Is it the one that gets 2.5 mpg and can pulverize any vehicle it comes into contact with lol

What about spraying those aerosol chemicals not only into the air but into the lungs of yourself, children and animals. Really what do you need to clean your oven once a month for? It's ridiculous to think that people have nothing better to do than to clean their (already) clean oven. As far as pollution and energy saving, I couldn't give a care in the universe.

Oh, I don't drive, I walk or bike, to where I need to go.

i clean my oven maybe twice a year. after it is clean, i line the bottom of the over with aluminum foil to catch anything that might spill. when the foil is dirty, i remove it and replace it. beats cleaning the stove all the time, and it is really cheap. aluminum is recyclable.

Get a self-cleaning convection oven...half the cook time of a regular oven. Spot clean oven with oven cleaner and use the self-clean option once or twice a year.

How about trying this...put a large cookie sheet under something you think might boil over.
