Smurfs movie: Who thought this was a good idea?

Who didn't watch Smurfs? It is undoubtedly one of the classic cartoons of the 80's, with one of the most annoying and simultaneously catchy theme songs of all-time. Now it's set to hit the big screen in a live action/animated form a la the recent Alvin and the Chipmunks. Hear that? It's another fond childhood memory screaming for its life.

The nostalgic sentiment of turning the Smurfs into a movie is a nice one, but really -- Hollywood is scraping at the bottom of the barrel for ideas. (What's next? Jem starring Lindsay Lohan?) Also, what kid watches the Smurfs anymore? The show aired from 1981-1990, it's barely on re-runs and, in general, cartoons have been replaced with shows like Hannah Montana and iCarly. I watched the Smurfs as a kid and there's no way I'm forking over 10 bucks for a movie ticket to see Papa Smurf and the gang (unless, Johnny Depp is somehow cast as Gargamoyle).

The one thing we can look forward to are some hopeful explanations of a couple things. Just what kind of mushrooms are those houses made of, and why there is only one girl in all of Smurf Village? Smurfette, you got some 'splanin to do. [Variety]

Honestly, I wondered who in the heck was going to see Alvin and the Chipmunks. It was a cartoon I remembered as a kid as being really annoying. My teen-aged son loathes the Chipmunk Christmas song so he'd hate us if we even rented that movie.

As for the Smurfs, I will admit that I spent way too much time as a child watching this show. It's just irritating when I try to watch it now. I really find it annoying they way the word "smurf" is used as a noun, verb and adjective. The only way I'm watching a Smurf movie is if the Robot Chicken guys do a full length version of the skit where the Smurfs did the movie Seven.

Everybody knows that Smurfette was created by Gargamel to lure the Smurfs into a trap, But Papa Smurf foiled that plan when he magically turned her hair from black to blond making her good. Also Papa Smurf's pants weren't red until Gargamel rotisseried him. I will see the Smurfs movie (im 31)

I honestly think chipmunks was a great movie. I also think the chipmunk movie will be good but nowhere as good as the chipmunk movie.

i just cant imagine the smurfs in a setting where there are real human actors. I mean how are they going to look like if they are to be animated to look humanly possible?
