The nostalgic sentiment of turning the Smurfs into a movie is a nice one, but really -- Hollywood is scraping at the bottom of the barrel for ideas. (What's next? Jem starring Lindsay Lohan?) Also, what kid watches the Smurfs anymore? The show aired from 1981-1990, it's barely on re-runs and, in general, cartoons have been replaced with shows like Hannah Montana and iCarly. I watched the Smurfs as a kid and there's no way I'm forking over 10 bucks for a movie ticket to see Papa Smurf and the gang (unless, Johnny Depp is somehow cast as Gargamoyle).
The one thing we can look forward to are some hopeful explanations of a couple things. Just what kind of mushrooms are those houses made of, and why there is only one girl in all of Smurf Village? Smurfette, you got some 'splanin to do. [Variety]
