Spending too much on my cats, part two: Should I buy a Litter Robot?

Well, it's been three months since I adopted Ruby and Dolly Parton and despite a few mishaps—a little pee on the bed, my ceramic Buddha no longer has a head and the bottoms of my dresses now have a kind of "de-constructed" look—things have gone swimmingly. I love these cats and I can't imagine my life without them. What I can imagine my life without is the smell of their litter boxes in my not-very-big apartment. We've tried all kinds of litter. The natural ones smell within an hour and the chemical ones don't smell, but scare me (some are made with known carcinogens. No, no, no.). Because I can't literally be manning the box after every visit, and because I equally don't love the scent when I get home, I really don't know what to do. I've heard good things about the Litter Robot, which waits seven minutes after your cat leaves the box and then begins to slowly turn and sift solid waste out of the clean litter and deposits it into a drawer in the base of the unit. You're supposed to only have to empty the drawer once a week.

Sounds like a dream, but here's the rub: The Litter Robot costs $330. YIKES! I'll totally pay it if I have to, but I need to know: does this thing work?
Does anyone have any experience with the Litter Robot?
Or perhaps another suggestion?
HELP.

Try looking into LitterMaid. Thats what I have. I have an old model that still sells for about $100, and its lasted 3 years and still going. They have newer ones with little extras with sleep timers and ionic air cleaners. Just make sure you have a good clumping litter. I haven't had any problems with smell as long as I keep it neat.

I have it and i love it!

i have two adorable cats and i work all day long, the last thing i wanted to do is come home and clean the litter box. Yes is epensive but is worth it, besides they know is expensive and that's why they offer the payment plan, jut put it on a credit card you don't use much and before you know it, it will be paid off.

i have to say my cats went through an adjustment period with it, but i did cold turkey on them, i threw out the old litter box and they started using it but i would leave off all day long and turn it on at night...it's been two months now and they are completely adjusted, is on all the time.

they love it, specially Penny who is a little OCD and would stop meowing about the old litter box when it was dirty.

I have tried littermaid, and had problems with it removing everything from the litter box and "shoveling" into the container. it also did not wait long enough after the cat had used the box, was very noisey which totally freaked my cat out. Another problem I had was that the box was shallow and did not have a cover. I like that the one you show above has a cover. I'm going to have to look into that.

It's really not that big a deal to change litter. I do it once a day in the morning before I do other things. Two good litters to use are Cat Country and Feline Pine. My place never smells. Be sure to scoop out all the wet litter and, of course, the solid waste. Once a week, dump the box and clean it thoroughly. Then fill it again. I wouldn't waste money on any of those contraptions when it's not that difficult to keep it clean and fresh yourself.

I find the cat liners help, and Fresh Step has been a favorite for my Vista since she was a kitten, she is now 6 yrs old.
