The Fulcrum: Is Liz Lemon the new Mary Richards?

Welcome to a new feature on Shine, The Fulcrum, where we take current TV shows and compare them to their older, original counterparts. Our inspiration? The lovely ladies you see to your left: Tina Fey and Mary Tyler Moore.

Who here watches the hee-lar-ious 30 Rock? Maybe its hiatus from the ole boob tube has made me grow fonder of the show, but I've been been missing new episodes. Like the deserts miss the rain.

So much that I've also probably been thinking about it too much. It dawned upon me (from my avid watching of Nick at Nite as a kid) that Tina Fey's Liz Lemon is eerily similar to Mary Tyler Moore's Mary Richards. A little graphical comparison after the jump!


As you can see from my highly sophisticated design skills, there are a lot of similarities between the two characters! To any other fans out there, if I'm missing anything, leave it in the comments and I'll add in your suggestions.

    I'm stumped--who is Liz Lemon's best friend? Not the weirdo blonde?

    I've only watched one season but I kinda got the feeling she didn't have any real friends besides Jack...

    wow for some reason, the similarities seem to go for every show out there about a woman...lets see, where shall I start???? Fresh Prince (Will's cousin Hillary), Roseanne (her sister Jackie) There are millions of them coming to mind that are too many to name...so when you do the comparisons, be a little bit more original with that.

    Wow - you guys are just mean. I think Ms. Ichikawa was pretty spot on with her comparison to some degree... as a bi-guy (hence my publically ostracized presence here) I think of both Mary and Liz as smart, industrious, unwavering, and beautiful women fighting against "superiors" that unwittingly demean them due to their ignorance. I have to agree though that it does seem like Liz not only has no female friend, as Mary did, but not really any friends at all... which only makes me love her more. She almost seems to get along with guys more than women, a character trait that I am certain is directly tied to Tina's own nature. Women that are brilliant, funny, and a little geeky/tom boyish are sooo freaking sexy!!! ..and don't get me started on those glasses!!! *growl*
