The hair biz stands up despite a down economy

One of the fun things about doing guest television appearances for the networks is getting your hair and make-up done by professionals. Most of the stylists are solo entrepreneurs so in addition to picking up tricks of the trade from them, I also like to ask: "How's business?" Does the beauty business hold its own in a sluggish economy? Most say, "So far so good." The reason they say, is because typically their customers aren't living paycheck to paycheck so they aren't likely to skimp on personal care services.

To further my research from the network make-up chair, I asked my friend Pete, who owns several salons and has been in the industry for more than 35 years. He concurred with my findings. However, he noted that some customers may stretch the time in between salon visits a little longer when times are tight. For example, if you regularly book salon appointments every four weeks, you might decide to go every five weeks instead.

My informal research reflects the national data on the salon-industry's vitality. There are some 75,000 beauty salons in the expanding beauty business -- a $16 billion industry. When you add an additional 5,000 men's hair salons and barber shops to the picture; hair care and personal services equals a lot of small business jobs!

A U.S. Department of Labor projection shows that between 2002 and 2012, the salon industry is expected to add 111,090 jobs. By 2012, the industry will include 865,000 workers, a 14.7 percent increase over 10 years. In addition to these numbers, many cosmetologists and stylists choose to be independent contractors renting space from salon owners and managing their own business needs.

So at the end of the day, it seems the salon business weathers an economic downturn fairly well. Personally, I think I'd give up a lot of things before I'd let anyone see the gray hairs sneaking through. How about you?

I agree. I still get my hair done, keep my color up as well.

I don't get manicures or pedicures as often; To remedy that situation, what I have done is invested in foot creme, and keep my toe nails a neutral shade that I can I wear a little longer, and do touch-ups until I am ready for a pedicure.

For the manicures, I have my nails buffed, no polish, and that way, there is less fuss with my hands.

Well I guess haircuts are still needed at some point, and color/texture change services. Just not once-a month or once every two-months thing this time. Not in A-WHILE! Not for my former customers in that industry. At least, not in the county where I live. We're large, and mostly rural, and limited on businesses in the outskirts of towns. Most business districts are in larger cities. I'm currently about 10-15 miles from all the larger towns, and less than 10 in closest small town.

I think customers and clients come in on a seasonal basis or perhaps twice or three times/yearly for hair services. It's slightly more often for nails or massage or other services like skin care. That is how I have experienced it (as a professional former licensed stylist) in salons and barber shops over the last 5 years or so. That is my personal observance, anyway.

SO IF ANYBODY IS UP THERE LISTENING-- THAT IS MY POST FOR SALONS/BARBERS AND THEIR CUSTOMERS. WE NEED JOB STABILITY/ HIGHER PAY/ BETTER BENEFITS TO CONTINUE IN THIS FIELD!!!

I am in the industry as well and I just resigned from an Executive position in the Cosmetic Industry. Trust me even in our biz, it is d-o-w-n! This is the only industry besides buying a pair of shoes where you can feel good about yourself, no size or weight barrier!!! We are feeling the crunch as well and change is on its way, I mean the only way from down is up so let's all just hang on to what we've got and look for the brighter things in life...;0)

I do my nails myself. My sister just became a cosmotologist. Even though it is a drive to get to her, she will cut and dye my hair for free. Of course I give her a good tip, but $20 verses over $100 is a great deal.
