The lost ART of Paperdolls (an inexpensive way to entertain your children)

The KIM R Paperdoll

During a 3 week period of cold and drizzling rain my teenage daughter was commenting that there was nothing to do. (NOTE: Commenting when done by a teenager can be misinterpted as complaining, whining or begging for money.) I pointed out that she still had a walk in closet that could not be walked in because the floor had about a foot of clothing covering it. This suggestion was met with "The Look" from my daughter and her friend.

I remembered something that my daughters loved to do when they were little. PAPERDOLLS. I used to draw a paperdoll on white poster board, cut it out and give them the doll. They would spend hours with a box of crayons and paper making clothes. As they grew older, they covered shoe boxes with left over wrapping paper and made homes for their dolls.

The cost of this entertainment is almost free. You do not have to be an artist or even draw a paperdoll because if you use Yahoo Search and type in FREE PAPERDOLLS you will find you many that you can print out immediately so you dont have to draw your own. I found paperdolls for girls that range from glamour girl dress up  to fairy tale characters. I was also amazed to discover the variety of paperdolls for boys. They had knights, soldiers, cowboys and office workers.

I made the KIM R Paperdoll using Photoshop and a printed paperdoll pattern, I added hair, skin tone, and a bobysuit. It took me about 20 minutes but more importantly, I kept the teenage girls quiet for almost 2 hours. Then they cleaned the closet...

I am not saying paperdolls are magic and will get your children to clean their rooms. I am saying it costs next to nothing to make a paperdoll and they can provide your children with hours of entertainment.

I loved paper dolls when I was a little girl! My mom used to buy them in what looked similar to a coloring book and you would punch out the dolls and their clothes and dress them. I recently looked at Kmart and discovered they still sold them but I had no idea I could print them online. Thanks for the info! This is a great inexspensive way to have fun.

    Dear Emma Mae,

I remember both of my sisters having paper dolls. I even helped my baby sister with hers. This post brings me back some good memories.

You just left a comment at my blog, saying that you had commented on some of my poems because you mistook me for another poet; and you apologized for that. Please, don't apologize! I am a million miles away from being J. Montana. I want all the comments I can get!

Besides, you commented on my poems, on my poetry--so, indeed, you were were commenting on me as poet, even if you did not know it.

You know, mistakes often end up bringing about something wonderful. For example, pearls are formed only in oysters with defective shells that don't close tightly or evenly enough to keep out all the sand grains. Oysters with perfect shells never can make pearls.

Perhaps you are such a pearl that has come to me; and I perhaps can be a pearl for you, if you decide you like my poetry, or me.

In any case, thank you so much for being so concerned.

    Bye now.

    --PWC

Now Emma!!! You KNEW the minute *eye* saw this *eye* would melt.

If your girls wanna play "theater" with their paper dolls, I bet I could turn up the instructions for a shabby chic theater made from a couple of old shutters and some paint.

Paper dolls... now if that isn't a blast from the past?!?!?!?

    LOVE it!

Emma, who knows -- one look at our Kimmy and maybe hearthside economics will make a come-back. Our economy certainly is dim enough for crafts to be on the list for Christmas.

Whoa Hooo!!! Kim, you're looking goooooood!
