The Loch Ness Monster

If you haven’t heard about The Montauk Monster yet, let us get you up to date with our latest obsession. A unidentifiable dead creature washed up on the beach in Long Island, New York earlier this week that set locals and the internet ablaze with a lot of questions and few answers. Many thought it was photoshopped but multiple eyewitnesses confirmed its existence with photographs. Some said it was the product of viral marketing, potentially for a program on Cartoon Network, but that one was shot down. Oh yeah, and Plum Island Animal Disease Center is just down the road. Pretty soon know-it-all posters on Gawker.com, the site that reported the initial sighting, were claiming to know the origin of this special: a sea turtle without its shell (but they don’t have teeth), a dog (but what about the bizarre webbed looking feet), a raccoon (overall size and body are not spot on). Several New Yorkers claim they saw the mysterious creature alive dating months back!

So what is this thing and why has no one gotten to the bottom of the Montauk Monster in days?! Even CNN wants to know! Animal control is of no help, nor are the “scientists” who have examined so far. Call me crazy, but a simple DNA test on the corpse some Long Island kids dragged home should do the trick. Or is there more to the story? Granted I just came off a multi-season marathon and viewing of the new X-Files movie, I Want To Believe, and maybe I’m a little more susceptible to buying into the hype that there are unexplained… things out there. But I won’t rest until I know if the Montauk Monster is or is not a monster. Hey, don’t laugh—you don’t know what this thing is either!

Speaking of unexplained creatures and cultural phenomena, which do you believe in? Peruse our slideshow for a few of our faves. [Gawker]

Hmmm... I haven't heard about the Montauk Monster at all! In the first photo, I can believe it might be a turtle without its shell. In the second photo, I thought, hmmm... might be a dog.

    Maybe it's a movie prop.

I think that this is totally a viral ad campaign. Isn't it odd that no one actually got their hands on it after these pictures were taken? Viral marketing!

This poor thing, whatever it is, still deserves compassion.
