The mystery of lost socks

A cute strategy to find MIA socks.

A cute strategy to find MIA socks.

At Home and Work + Money Editor Dory Devlin and I were having a little instant message moment as we contemplated the Great Mystery of Lost Socks. How is it possible that one can buy a new pack of white athletic socks, toss them into the washer and dryer (connected so they don't separate), and poof, one has vanished?

Multiply this occurrence by four people living in one home and you have a large laundry bag full of single, lonely socks that've lost their partners. It's tragic.

Dory and I have concluded that "The Littles" must truly exist and that one day, we'll find those random socks in cracks and crevices throughout our homes.  Not really, but our kids' imaginations are getting to us.

But I really do hate losing socks. I'm teaching my kids to pair their socks before they put them in the laundry basket so we don't find them under the bed, behind a toy shelf, IN the toy shelf, or in the dog's "secret stash of all things stolen from humans."

I loved this idea for a Lost Socks clipboard shown on Lovely by M. Easy to make, cute on the eyes, and maybe, just maybe, the key to lost-sock sanity.

I tried safety pinning the guys' socks together when I washed and dried them. But still, that little sock gnome figured it out and continured to hide them.

after all these years I still believe that there is a portal to another dimension that opens up in the back of the dryer. I wonder if that portal is present on gas dryers, also.

Khaliela - I think I'd need abot 5 lingerie bags to cover our fleet of socks! It's never the washer. It's always the dryer...and it's really freaky!

    The Littles. Think about it.

From a guys point of view

    the eaisest soloution is

Just buy lots of the same style of socks

20 pairs of tube socks for casual

    15 pairs tan for work

    10 pairs black for work

then when you seem to have about half left

then throw them all out and start over

Simple no pair except for color EZ

I have a big basket of 'lefties'!I plan on throwing the whole thing out soon and starting over. I think color coding for each person in the house will solve the problem or just buy flip flop from now on!

I totally agree about the portal hole thing. I buy white socks with pink Hanes writing on the toe for me and white socks with blue hanes on the toe for my 9 yr old. I rebuy socks about 3 times a year!

we have spotted the sock gnome. he lives in my dryer. i swear he is in cahoots with the bruise gnome(the person responsible for those odd bruises you wake up with)

in all seriousness though, look behind your dryer and washer and on the sides. i've found more lost socks there than matched pairs.

    incredible.

the socks dont get lost in the dryer they get lost when you take them out the sock is in a big pile and it might fall out and after that your dog or your kids might get a hold to them and it just all goes downhill from there
