I'm sure that by now you've seen or heard about the New Yorker's depiction of Obama and his wife. I won't even link to it. The decision to use that cartoon will obviously have a negative effect on Obama's campaign. Don't they realize that this is only drawing on conservative America's fears? I don't care if it was meant as "satirical." No one's going to read the biographical column or the explanation of the cartoon. All they're going to see is a confirmation of their suspicions.
This, to me, just illustrates the narrow- mindedness that can still be found in America. No one would ever dare portray McCain, the "war hero," like this. No, they choose the black (mixed) guy who happened to have been given a Muslim name at birth. Why? Because they are afraid- of change, and of what it means when a minority politician becomes the best choice for America's future. I almost had hope that this country was changing when I saw that a man with skin like mine could possibly become our President. Looks like I was wrong. One step forward, two steps back.
