She is also against gay rights of any kind-- marriage or even granting spousal privileges to gays. In her world, I guess it's ok to live with and love somebody but be unable to make medical decisions for them or take advantage of their health insurance so you can adopt a baby and raise it with a full-time parent at home.
She is in favor of leaving heathcare exactly the way it is-- with the insurance companies competing for customers and leaving many people without coverage. Only, in her mind, competition will drive down medical costs-- yeah right. Maybe she needs a better pair of glasses because she can't see what free maket heathcare has led to.
She favors drilling in the Alaksan Wildlife Preserve and off the shores of the US to get more oil. She thinks global warming hasn't been caused (at least in part) by humanity. Last time I checked, environmentally-minded individuals favor moving away from fossil fuels because they contribute to global warming. They don't support seeking more fossil fuel to extend our dependency on it. So this means she isn't an expert on environmental policy. But that's what the McCain campaign would like us to believe.
She has been praised for curtailing federal government earmarks that were designed to fund pork projects in Alaska. The feather in her cap here was the so-called "bridge to nowhere" project. The only reason Palin nixed that project was because she found out federal earmarks weren't going to fund the entire thing. When she found out Alaska was going to have to ante up, she axed it. In reality, Palin has accepted more in eamarks than any other governor over the last two years.
Palin has also taxed the people of Alaska so she can remain in her own home instead of living in the governor's mansion in Anchorage and she is championing a bridge to connect her hometown to Anchorage (while possibly necessary, it would certainly facilitate her commute). This is self-serving behavior. Will she be willing to move her family to DC or is she going force the American people to pay for it every time she has to fly down to DC to fulfill her duties as VP if McCain is elected?
She's tough on drugs and tough on crime. But she is also embroiled in a case in which she may have abused her powers to get an individual fired from a job. That sounds like corruption to me-- just not of the fiscal kind.
She has no national level political experience. She is ignorant of foreign policy and international relations. She never even had a passport until last year. But having Russia as her next door neighbor and visting some American troops abroad makes her an expert while being governor of one of the least populated states in the nation supposedly makes her more qualified to be president (if McCain dies) than Barack Obama (if he's elected).
Hmmm. . .I think there is something wong with that because a US Senator with some foreign relations experience and a whole lot of national-level policy-making experience makes Barack Obama a thousand times more qualified for the presidency than Palin could ever hope to be.
I think Palin was put on the Republican Presidential ticket because she rallies the ulta-conservative Republican base and she might appeal to certain so-called feminists who would vote for a woman just because she's woman. I honestly hope most American women are smarter than that.
So let's focus on the issues in this election. Let's dispense with the mud slinging and the name calling (McCain's entire campaign stratgey thusfar). And let's move away from "family values" because, in all honesty, the government has no right to force any values on anybody-- especially when the values the government pomotes are those of the ultra-right. The government should be responsible for keeping people safe from its enemies, themselves, and the people and organizations that mainpulate the financial markets and make life harder for everybody.
The debates should help you choose who to vote for. Because the debates will tell you what each candidate stands for and what his plan for the country is. So watch the debates and ask yourself these questions as you do:
Who really wants out of Iraq? Do they have a plan?
What would the benefits be of getting out of Iraq?
Would pulling out of Iraq be any more damaging than pulling out of Vietnam was?
What could we do in the US with all the extra money that goes to fight Iraq ($10 BILLION a month)?
What would it be like to have affordable health insurance for everybody?
Does saving Social Security matter?
Does affordable college education matter?
Does actually funding the federal mandates for grade school and high school education matter?
Does a healthy economy with good jobs for Americans matter?
How have tax breaks for the rich and the corporations screwed the rest of us?
How would continuing these tax breaks or amending them but keeping them screw us for even longer?
Does the candidate have a viable plan for accomplishing their platform?
Who is willing to confront issues?
Who is willing to outline how they will fund their plans and how realistic is this outline?
Then ask yourself how each candidate's positions jibe with your own opinions and your own needs. Then make your choice based on the issues-- not on who would be more fun to hang out with or who has the best family values platform. Vote the real issues and vote with your heads.
Just THINK before you vote.

Report AbuseFools and Sages - Thank you for this very thought out article. It really helped me. I've really been struggling lately - not because I am in love with Palin, but because I really like Obama and what he stands for. I was raised Catholic, and pro-life has been pounded into my head forever and ever. I would NEVER have an abortion (well never say never, but I don't think so) but I can't help but think it's very very dangerous to tell someone else they can't. And I guess that makes me Pro Choice. Which makes me feel horribly horribly guilty! LOL.
As I've gotten older - I'm 38 - I am realizing that just because I think one thing does not mean a huge group of people must also. I do find the Christian viewpoint on pro-life a good one. I think if my daughter were 15 and wanted to keep the baby I, with half a brain in my head, could figure out how to make it work. But not everyone has that same intelligence. (Not saying I'm Einstein - just willing to make a lot of good out of a s---ty situation.) And what about back alley abortions? No no no!
Uggg. My point: I'm definitely voting Obama, but it's tough. What are your thoughts on this? Do you mind responding? Thanks again.

Report AbuseThinking is good. It's even better if you keep an open mind (I'm a little tired of people implying that someone with beliefs on the other side automatically makes them wrong) and do some research. For example: Even with your so-called "tax-breaks" the "rich" and corporations already pay way, way, way more taxes (yes, that's percentage-wise) than the rest of us. They already fund most of our economy. Will increasing that imbalance really help people somehow get jobs? Or will is send our economy even further off kilter and send even more jobs overseas, because what corporation is going to want to stick around when it can pay fewer taxes in the SOCIALIST countries of Europe?

Report Abusehealth care for everyone is good but I also believe that we the tax payers should have to foot the bill for those who are too dam lazy to work. Obama wants more money for welfare and the gov sponored health care adn yes there are seme people who really need the help but most of the people on welfare could work but just dont want to so they apply for and manage to get welfare. This is coming from someone who qualifies for it when i did my taxes last year I was told that i could be on it adn that i should. I told em to basically go to hell if I was that bad off Id go to livin off the land not ask the gov to help me. Also, Obama says one thing and does another not saying McCain hasnt but still. Obama tells his elitest friends that all of us in rural America are bitter and because of that we cling to our religion and guns. Then he went and told the country he doesnt want to ban our guns and hunting is good and will always be around. Yet he banned handguns in Illnios or voted to he voted against the overturn of the DC gun ban that the Supreme Court said was against the constition, He wants to ban ammo that is commonly used for hunting he wants to close gun stores with in 5 miles of schools which would close over 90 percent of the gun stores which would be a detriment to those of us who value our second ammendment rights to own guns. Ill admit McCain aint the best canidate but he is the better one. He is not out to take away our constitutional rights Obama is. You may think that all of us out here are rednecks and dont need our guns or to hunt but just think for a minute. What if someone broke into your house and was threatening your life or family in one instance you could have a gun and protect your and your families life or you could not have one and be at the mercy of the criminal. If you ban guns law abiding citizens will not have guns but the criminals will still find ways to get them. I live every winter off the meat i get from shooting a deer. If there was no hunting there would be way more car/deer crashes. Think a little bit you may not like it but hunting is good for this country by cities getting bigger and bigger theyve taken away the habitat for the deer and so they will start being a nussiance to people so why not let people hunt them and eat the meat. Im not about slaughtering im about herd populations. My family yes would love to have a set of antlers hangin on the wall but most times we shoot does because it controls the population and thats what hunting is about.
You may not agree with me and thats fine but when things are being said for Obama I feel I should show the other side also.
And Sarah Palin is not running for president so comparing her to Obama is not fair if anything she should be compared to Biden.
It also doesnt matter who is taxed the cost of it will still come down to everyday Americans because if Corp are taxed more they will raise the prices of thier product so dont think it wont affect you. And to do the things he wants to do Obama will have to tax everyday Americans.
Happy Trails to yall and remember you shouldnt ask what America can do for you but what you can do for America

Report AbuseNice post Fools and Sages! Choosing a candidate who you are going to vote for should be like interviewing someone for a job. You should check their background experience, and their references. I try to do that as much as possible. www.ontheissues.org is a great website with the candidates voting records and stances on all the issues.
This is for Cowgirl, I like your response in regards to it's passion. I just have a question, how is McCain spending billions of our tax dollars on the war better than Obama spending it towards healthcare for everyone? Just a question that popped in my head while reading your response, I'm not an Obama supporter but I believe quality Healthcare is a right and not a privelage. We already pay out the ear for personal insurance through our employer. For a family plan we pay $200 out of our pocket for the insurance premiums, the employer pays $400, then we pay whatever percentage is taken out for government funded insurance...we'll say $50. And that's not taking into account the copayment (if you're lucky to have a copay) for any hospital or doctor visits or prescriptions. I personally would rather pay the $250 a month into a plan that would give me 100% coverage, so I would be paying about the same but saving a lot more in the long run (because there would be no copays or deductibles).
