Urban Isolation in Call Center Outsourcing

http://caddellinsightgroup.com/blog2/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/call-center.jpg

Call center outsourcing in offshore locations has become so popular nowadays. This newest industry has carved a large space in the global market and is here to stay. There is no doubt about how it will be a great moving force in the world for many years to come. There are a lot of people who hate this trend because it is bringing the jobs out of the country and into other countries. But to this I say, if the job can be outsourced, then more than likely, that job isn’t really much of a job anyway. And this is true. A call center job is very stressful and lonely as well. It is also feels so very repetitive since you will have to say the same lines over and over and over again.

So what does this kind of work do to the employee? A lot of call center outsourcing agents I know all have this one problem. After getting out of work at the end of the day, they all feel sort of lonely. Now some people may find it quite intriguing how that works. How could an employee possibly be depressed when they have just finished a hard day at work and they can now finally relax? There is no simple explanation for such an occurrence. But in truth, this is a common thing, this kind of post work depression. And a lot of call center offshore outsourcing agents experience it for some reason. There is no accurate account of why this is happening. But one survey show that out of 486 from different companies and accounts, nearly 66 percent have experienced or is experiencing this kind of thing.

So what is actually causing this? Well, some people say that the thing that is causing this is the extreme urban isolation that is caused by working at a call center outsourcing company. Agents complain that after they get out from work, they feel like they really need to talk to some people. Now this is quite ironic. They have after all spent the whole day talking to people through the phone and yet they still feel starved for human connection, real human connection. The fact that they have been talking to people all day and yet have not really been “talking” to them at all really makes it worse. This is urban isolation. Call center outsourcing companies need to watch out for these effects and create measures to counter it and keep their employees happy.

Interesting. The cubicle walls probably contribute to the isolation as well. Looking at nature - trees thru a window might help.
