Spent a lot of money on game
consoles this year? Just on the Wii you say? Well, you
are one of the millions of people that have helped to put the
Wii
so far ahead of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in terms of sales.
What is your reward? The fact that NO one seems to be able to
take advantage of this platform in our generation. The Wii
seemed like a gimmick when I first saw it, and now I’m pretty
sure that it is. That’s right, a gimmick. The
machine was supposed to have some uber killed apps by now.
Something, ANYTHING, to sate our ravenous taste for innovation.
So far, we have Rayman: Raving Rabbids. That’s
about it. The game actually took advantage of the Wii’s
controls to bring a much more interactive game that most gamers
have seen since the era of the arcade. And, during that time,
it seemed like the Wii was set to change the face of gaming by
bringing at lease an arcade experience to the home console
market. Instead, we have been given the oh-so-rehashed
Mario
Kart
sleepquel, another boring Smash Brothers game, and just GARBAGE
from the third-party scene. Oh Wii, who will save thee?
Perhaps the Wii doesn’t need saving in your eyes.
Perhaps the Balance Board is the second coming of Christ to
you? Well, and let me be clear, GET OVER IT. The
balance board is just another peripheral piece of crap that you
don’t need. It’s the 32X, in
controller-form. I don’t like Wii Fit because I
ACTUALLY work out, and it uses the worthless BMI-format.
Also, the idea of Yoga and push-ups being a video
game
isn’t terribly appealing to me. Sort of like, if you
are avoiding working out, and you think Wii Fit will get you in
shape, you will now avoid Wii Fit. Also, the smathering of
snowboarding games coming out look like extra crap, and will surely
hurt any stand-alone power those games would have had as regular
titles to be used with the standard controller.
Now, to give the Wii some room, I’ll include a mention of
Mario Galaxy. The game totally rocks, but is still not that
innovative. The waving of your hand to make Mario spin and
counter incoming projectiles just isn’t that interesting in
terms of a control scheme. Rayman, was also good (as
I’ve stated), but still was only a surface-scratcher in terms
of presentation. No More Heroes looks pretty awesome, so
I’m going to try it and probably write a review for it; just
to let you know if it is. Also, Metroid Prime:
Corruption, is the absolute standard-setting game in terms of FPS
controls on the Wii, good job Nintendo
.
These notable exceptions don’t excuse that Nintendo and
third-party developers haven’t gone through the trouble
needed to make the Wii all that it could be. There have been
long delays between nine out of ten titles, and that’s a long
time for anyone that actually ENJOYS gaming to wait. Casual
gamers you say? Forget casual gamers. Let them blow
their money on Wii Fit and sell their balance boards at garage
sales and on Craigslist in three years. Those of us that are
REAL gamers want our games excellent and often; and we don’t
like excuses.
To sum up, get it together Big N. The Gamecube and the 64
sucked aside from a few must-have games. Don’t do this
now that you have everything where it should be in terms of
hardware. You are on the cutting-edge; a place where MS and
Sony
DREAM of being right now. Don’t let them lie to you;
they would HAPPILY trade their system for yours. Next time
around, just WATCH them look for ways to rip off the Wii. For
now though, while you have the chance to pick the free-throw, GO
FURTHER. We need a Nintendo that is ready to stay dominant in
a world where dumb companies are still talking about bit-rates and
mega-pixels. It’s not about bigger, it’s about
BETTER.
