That will cause more unemployment because if people don't spend, more jobs will be lost. Somehow our Congressional representatives, all of whom have jobs, don't seem to recognize this. Benefits while you are unemployed are important, but what is really important is creating jobs NOW. That notion, which all of us seem to understand, seems to have eluded Congress. There should be only one test of whether something should be included in this bill. Will this create jobs in the short run? If it doesn't spend money now or cut taxes in a way that has an impact this year it shouldn't be in this bill. Every job created now will give money to someone who will spend it now, creating more jobs. That will change the psychology of the economy. Banks will start lending (Congress can help there) and people will spend and more jobs will be created
NOTE TO CONGRESS: Do things that create jobs now. Don't just pass bills that spend money on your pet projects which may be worthwhile but don't have short-term impact. What is one of the hot jobs today? Satellite dish installer. Why? Because we are changing over from antiquated analog TV to digital TV and someone has to make that happen.
NOTE 2 TO CONGRESS: Government jobs are not as good as private sector jobs -- not because what government workers do is unimportant or because they don't spend their salaries but because if they do their job well that does not create more jobs. (And if we have to pay more taxes to pay their salaries that reduces everyone else's spending.) In the private sector if an employee is productive it generates profit for the company and that encourages the company to hire more people, who will create more profit for them.
There is only one test for what should be in the stimulus bill. Will it create jobs NOW? If you went line by line in what Congress is considering most of us could answer which items pass that test.
Let me quote the President again. "This not a game."

Report AbuseOk Mr. President well do something about it, and I'm not talking about writing checks out it's bad enough we don't have the money now. PLEASE don't suggest borrowing money we are in so much debt now. This is for the president and everyone that reads it, you said you had a plan Mr. President so exercise it, and if you supported Obama your to blame. HE HAS NO PLAN AMERICA!!!! I am a Hispanic male and if you don't agree feel free to write to me. Gonzalesjoseph42@yahoo.com. Just a thought. (please don't take this personal)

Report AbuseI am for the plan, only because there hasn't been a good alternative plan presented. There needs to be a stimulus NOW. The economy of the world hinges on the economy of the United States. Many industries are suffering because global demand for their products had dried up. If we have to borrow the money to get this all kickstarted, then so be it.
After all, we borrowed (and continue to borrow) money to pump into Iraq and the banks and wall street bailouts. JMO.

Report Abuse"The government announced today that the unemployment rate is now 7.6%"
Which means 92.4% of the populous is working...how about that?!?!? Let's talk about those people shall we?
The people who ARE working, the people who ARE paying their bills and their mortgages...how about a big pat on the back for them...how about looking on the bright side instead of allowing the President and his cohorts to concentrate only on the bad...so they can LOOK good and take the credit when things improve!!!!

Report AbuseOk - so let's put that 7.6% into real figures and quote some of the rest of the article....
"The rate is expected to go higher -- up to 9 percent over the next six months, where it is likely to hover through 2010, analysts predict."
"January U.S. job losses were widespread across almost all major industries and made for the worst totals since 1974."
"About 3.6 million jobs have vanished since the December 2007 start of the recession. Of those, half were lost in the last three months."

Report AbuseHonestly, i have been ready for this stimulus to send out but I think its that damn Congress. they're not worrying about the bill because at least they have a job. But it seems like the president is begging and pleading with the "stupid" people because its not going through their butts and out their ears to realize that the American people really need this package to help with jobs and other projects. I'm mean; What is it going to take for them to pass this bill? What? Another Great Depression????? We do not need that right now. What we really need is a lot of help and understanding from congress- Right NOW!! At least the president gets what this nation really needs right now. Does the the congress actually "gets it"? To me: I don't think so. They really need to get their attitude straight.

Report AbuseYou cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. the Gov't cannot give anybody anything that the Gov't does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half get the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

Report AbuseWhen you'll have to stand in bread lines, and have no TV,PC, or cell phone,or cable then you'll know what HURT really is. No I do not want the stimulus package passed. There is no free ride, we will all pay for it down the line, some how some way.
I don't want the Gov't in my house, or my body. They have enough free reign.

Report AbuseIf this spending bill goes through, get ready for double-digit inflation again a year or two down the road...
Events in the economy take time. Ours has already had an enormous "stimulus", in the form of a very large drop in oil prices---one analyst estimated that that adds up to about a billion dollars a day worth of additional money in the pockets of consumers and businesses ( and government, for that matter ). The effects of that influx of money has not yet been felt, and yet here we go throwing more into the economy, hastily, without a lot of thought or study as to efficiency or effectiveness. Typical neoKeynesian foolishness, straight out of the 1970s...
