I became acquainted with theoretical
communism thru my secondary school history textbooks & the
principles of equality, work & food for
everyone seemed noble.Modern Indian democracy is 60 years old and
apart from the states of Kerala & West Bengal communists havn't
been able to make much of an impact in Indian politics.
They have been part of a few coalition governments at the centre
but their numbers have been too few for them to bring about any
meaningful fundamental changes.Infact they used to be a part of the
present ruling coalition in N.Delhi and pulled out after the
government decided to go thru with the
Indo-US nuclear deal .Central government survived the
no-confidence vote and would almost certainly complete it's tenure
of 5 years.
Indians are said to be the most religious people on the planet and
I believe because Communism does not subscribe to any god/religion
it won't succeed in India.I'm not aware about Kerala but in West
Bengal (under democratic Communist rule for around 3 decades)
Communist leaders do make appearances at religious festivals of
different communities.
One think I don't like about Communism is that it has no democracy
however Indians could live with that.Around half of our population
is struggling for two square meals a day and due to strict social
hierarchies & centuries of colonial rule we are quite used to
someone else making decisions on our behalf.
Our neighbour Nepal recently kicked out the monarchy and ushered in
the Communists.Let's see how that experiment works.I was in Nepal
last month & it seems the
Maoist government there is trying to wean away people from
religion.I was told before the Maoists took over there used to be
lots of Swastikas & prayer bells in and outside temples on the
border however now you don't see them.
That's fine with me however Nepal has been/is being used to push
illegal currency, explosives & terrorists in India by our not so
friendly neighbours and if Maoists arn't able to deliver anything
solid they would be happy to promote that on a bigger scale, just to
give poor Nepalese people some anti-India news to occupy their
minds with.India does have a reputation for being a soft target
& with Indian & Nepalese citizens not requiring a Visa to
enter each other's territory, controlling this would truly be a
Himalayan task.
