Why do we care about Jessica Simpson’s weight gain?

Earlier this week, pictures emerged of Jessica Simpson performing at the 24th Annual Chili Cook Off in Pembroke Pines, Florida sporting a much fuller figure. We too were surprised that the singer notorious for her expertly sculpted bod in “The Dukes of Hazzard” had packed on a few pounds, but we were even more shocked at the magnitude of Jessica backlash these new photos brought on.

Ashlee Simpson defended her sister today on her blog:

"I am completely disgusted by the headlines concerning my sister's weight. A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman's weight or figure as a headline on Fox News.

All women come in different shapes, sizes, and forms and just because you're a celebrity, there shouldn't be a different standard.

Is this something you would say to your wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, or even a friend? I seriously doubt it. How can we expect teenage girls to love and respect themselves in an environment where we criticize a size 2 figure? Now can we focus on the things that really matter."

Avoiding the fact that Ashlee was unhappy with her appearance and got a nose job and sounds a teeny bit hypocritical, we think she’s right. The obsession with Jessica’s weight is unbelievable and the comments are mean. "I'm not fat," Jess recently confessed to a pal. "Going from a size 2 to a size 8, that's not fat. If I weren't Jessica Simpson, no one would care." We’d have to agree.

Why must celebrities look a certain way? If Jessica had always been this size, would she have been equally famous? Are people trashing Jess because they like seeing her struggle with her weight as they do in their own lives?

Do we enjoy seeing celebrities falter? What do you think of Jessica Simpson’s new figure?

I dont think shes as fat as people are making it. Those jeans are HORRIBLY unflattering. And that is adding to her looking fuller.

Damn if she was losing weight at her former size people would be calling her anorexic. No satisfying the public I guess.

I heard she was putting on weight for a role? Is that true?

Personally i dont care what she looks like. But.., she is a celebrity and celebs are paid to look good. (i certainly wouldnt pay her to sing) If you are not looking good then you arent doing your job. I know its not fair.

On the other hand. That this is news on FOX, is really sad and disgusting. Ashlee is totally correct in blasting the media for it. A size 8 is not fat. Its just bigger than what she was.

Having said that... The BIGGEST CRIME she's committing is wearing those highwasted jeans and belt combo. Cuz THAT is a hot mess.

Her worse offense is the unflattering outfit, that's about it.

She's gorgeous regardless if she's a size 2, or 8 and shouldn't apoligize one bit for having some curves. Women are suppose to!

We've gotten so use to seeing size 2's on t.v, that if you see a "normal" size woman she appears large, when in reality she isn't.

It would help to have more "normal" sized women of various shapes potrayed on televison and movies. Our perceptions are becoming very skewd. I think it's going to take along time to even attempt to change it, but I hope it does happen.

I think her weight is no one's business. She's a singer and an actress--not a runway model. She's beautiful and curvy and Ashlee is right, the media is off base turning her sister's weight gain into a news story. When male singers/actors gain weight, it doesn't make headlines. They should leave Jess alone.

I have to agree...it's the outfit that's awful and makes her look 10 pounds heavier than she is. She just needs to understand that what looked good on her size 2 body, doesn't necessarily look good on her perfectly normal size 8 body.

THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE ARE COMMENTING ON HER WEIGHT, IS B/C OF HOW VAIN SHE PRESENTED HERSELF. SHE ALWAYS CAME OFF AS VERY CONCIETED AND SELF CENTERED. SHE PUT HERSELF ON THAT PEDISTAL, NOW THE CRUEL WORLD AND MEDIA ARE SAYING LIVE UP TO IT.HOWEVER WE ALL KNOW A SIZE 8 IS PERFECT, B/C THAT'S WHAT I'AM LOL
