Why do we have to be "consumers"?

You hear on the news all the time about how our economy is dependent on "consumers" to spend thier hard earned income on everything from food to electronics. Why? Ask yourself if you really need to keep spending. What is wrong with saving money? If you save your money, it means you are not spending. If you are not spending, you are not a consumer. If you are not a consumer, then what are you? Maybe you already have everything you need to live well, so why keep spending? So my question is: why do we have to be "consumers"?

Because our economy is not a subsistence one. Subsistence economies (usually) keep their citizens in long-term poverty.
