Action Figure Toys and Your Kid

There are good reasons to embrace action figures. Action figures encourage pretend play, role playing and social interaction. Unfortunately, we have convinced ourselves and our boys that pretend play is only suited for girls and we guide boys toward sports, games and other competitive activities.

Nothing can be further from the truth, there's quite a bit of developmental benefit to young boy's playing out scenes and acting out stories with their action figure toys. Because of this, action figures are a great teaching tool. They offer an opportunity for social interaction with other kids and a way for creative play. A good bonus for action figures, is that many action figures come with detailed story lines, and play with a particular figure can lead the child to buy books or comic books with the same character, encouraging reading and other activities.

Passion for these toys really take off for preschool and school age kids. They are at an age when action figures and their popularity in school are at their highest. In many cases, a child will gravitate to a particular hero or story line rather than to the entire category of action figure toys. Action figures, are characters of action. In many instances, this action is violent. It can be kicking, punching, organized fighting, or warfare. You as a parent need to make the call as to what level of behavior you find acceptable. Some parents can tolerate this kind of play as long as the kid understand the difference of a make-believe world and the reality.
