Generally, current event cartoons have a quirky, wry sense of poking fun to open a conversation. Unfortunately, some events are bleak and startling with not a darn thing funny about them. This illustration was difficult for me to do; however, I think it is time to  spotlight a  conversation that moms and dads everywhere have been having a long time.  How can we protect our children? Predators, gangs, perverts... now the court system?

When even under the cloak of justice, judges are accused of  extorting millions from  private juvenile institutions for sending children to the institution, how can we keep our children safe?

Some of the offenses were as little as swiping change from parked cars or disparaging a school principal on Facebook.

Pa. Judges Accused of Jailing Kids for Cash Yahoo! News

"I've never encountered, and I don't think that we will in our lifetimes, a case where literally thousands of kids' lives were just tossed aside in order for a couple of judges to make some money," said Marsha Levick, an attorney with the Philadelphia-based Juvenile Law Center, which is representing hundreds of youths sentenced in Wilkes-Barre.

Prosecutors say Luzerne County Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan took $2.6 million in payoffs to put juvenile offenders in lockups run by PA Child Care LLC and a sister company, Western PA Child Care LLC ...

We need to talk about this.

  • Have you had similar experiences?
  • What do you think should happen to these judges?
  • Can you imagine anything more bleak than "serving time" for swiping change out of a parked car? When I was young, that might have fallen under the category of a child prank.
  • Do you trust the court system?
  • Does court tv reflect the real thing?
  • Would you suspect the judge of taking money  if your child or a child you knew was treated harshly? What would you do?
  • Should the records of these kiddos be wiped out? Should the parents sue the courts?

MONCO to DC: Thank you, you managed to hit on exactly the right note to instill some lightness in a very dismal illustration. Excellent!

I think what happened is horrible. Kids deserve better. I have always loathed the local court system concerning children in my state of Michigan. But to find something like this is apalling. I do think that some children should be punished for their actions, but in a different way. Make them do some community service, clean up a park, or work in a soup kitchen . SHOW them how to do the right thing. TEACH them to be responsible for their actions. And do so without lining the pockets of a corrupt system.

I was trying to think of a caption for the artwork. But I will instead vote for the first one by MonCo.

Its a pretty serious problem when kids from single parents spend more time in jail than many legitimate criminals. Yet, it happens all the time and no one seems willing to help.

Nothing like sending kids away to learn how to become better criminals. Do you know where you're children are, why not?!
