Are you waiting to have a baby because of the economy?
editor
You'll always hear people
say there's never a "perfect" time to have kids. But
being financially prepared does help to ensure you'll be able
to afford the costs associated with bringing a kid (
or
eight) into your family. (If you're curious about
how much your kid will cost you over a lifetime,
go play with this calculator over at BabyCenter.)
So is the economic slowdown factoring into a couple's decision
to have a baby?
According to Yahoo! Buzz, it
sure seems so. Baby-related searches (e.g., queries on
pregnancy research and baby gear) "are at an all-time low
since 2005." However, searches for information on baby showers
is at an all-time high. Weird, right?
What about you? Are you waiting to get pregnant because
of the recession?

I am pregnant and so are all my girlfriends. Literally we are all pregnant... It is truly weird look for a baby boom in January and February in Texas!

My husband's company closed in January, so we are waiting until he gets a job before we go making babies. If he had a stable job, I don't think we would postpone due to the economy, but without him having a job, it is a necessity.

No. Not really... I personally am waiting until my body is healthy (ie, losing weight safely) so that I can carry a safe baby... but my husband and I both are waiting until we are in a house or close to moving into a house. We don't want to bring up a baby in a apt., we will if we need to but it's just our ideal to not.

If the recession were really affecting me personally financially then yes I would wait. I personally think it is irresponsible to bring a kid into the world if you don't have the resources to care for the kid.

ABSOLUTLY! I planned on having two children. I had my first child two years ago. Right now my husband's job isn't as secure, and both our companies have been making cut backs (including our raises). It would be a really bad time to have a second child. With the cost of the basic necessities increasing, and our salaries decreasing, I would like the see things get better in this economy before I start thinking about it.

Not really, it has nothing to do with the economy directly, just with the fact that we both are making less than we would like and want to have more saved up. We had to choose between my husband going back to school and a baby. Since we're only 23, we can have babies later and school will help out more in the long run right now.

We were planning on waiting another year or so anyway, but if things continue to go as they have with work being slow for my husband and my company laying people off all the time, we will continue to wait until we are in the clear. I don't think it's the economy that makes people wait, it's their personal circumstances, but if their circumstances are being effected by the economy (i.e. job loss, pay cut, longer working hours to compensate for cutting employees) then yes, the economy makes people wait, as it should. No one should bring a child into this world without as much mental, physical and financial prepardness as possible.

I'm waiting till I have so much in savings before I start having a family. It really has nothing to do with the economy but is my personal preference. I want to know I have a back up plan in case anything bad were to happen.
