Babies born on sidewalks & other strange places

One CafeMom had a surprise home birth. (Not unusual unless you're not planning on it.)

Cafe MicheleZ, who's expecting twins in another month, is worried that her babies might come so fast (she should be so lucky!) that her midwife or doctor of choice may not make it to the delivery room in time. She's thinking of creating a Birth Plan B and C just in case.

This is probably a good idea considering the strange and unexpected places babies decide to pop out. Just this week, a woman in Eau Claire, Wisconsin gave birth on the sidewalk outside the hospital.

According to the Eau Claire Wire, the baby's grandmother drove laboring mom Tiffany Kohls to the hospital, but Kohls couldn't hold back as the car pulled up. The grandmother ran into the hospital and grabbed a wheelchair and asked two security guards for help.

But it was too late, and Kellen Kohl arrived on the sidewalk before maternity nurses could race to the front door. Mom and son are reported to be doing fine.

As for me, If I'd waited another half-hour to drive to the hospital, my daughter would have arrived in the car. Labor came on fast, and she greeted the world about 10 minutes after they got me situated in the birthing room. My own doctor didn't even make it. They told me to stop pushing while they pulled some other doctor, whom I'd never met, from another room to catch the baby as she came out. Liability thing.

Was your baby delivered in an unexpected way or in an odd place?

I was in labor with my first and was having contractions every 2-3 minutes. The monitor showed no contractions and as they told me (rudely) that I was not in labor and I would know what real labor felt like when it happened and to go home my best friend got angry and said to check her. I was over 7 centimeters dilated and my baby was born within the hour.

Thanks to that friend my baby wasn't born on the sidewalk.

Jessi kay, it's very thoughtful of you to want to help. There are actually many ways you could help her out. Take her a meal, offer to do the dishes, sweep/vacuum the floor, ask her if she'd like you to hold/watch the baby while she takes a long bath or shower, offer to drive her to her appointments if needed.

Be there for her, but develop a system so that you don't accidently wake her if she's napping (for my sister and I who had babies the same day, we devised a system where we called each other on our cell phones, if the cell phone was off, that meant we were resting, if it was on, that meant we were free to talk).

My son was born in an ambulance! Pain went from just a bit to HOLEY HELL! We got to the high way and traffic was stopped, we called 911 and Trenton was born about 5 minutes later. Everyone gave me grief over waiting until i was induced with my 2nd child. I went from 5 cent. to 10 in 38 minutes (with epidural), 2 pushes later, she was out! Then everyone figured it out! They just pop out like torpedoes!

Mine wasn't born in the car for a few minutes. I was feeling her head so low that I couldn't sit properly and when we arrived in hospital the midwife could feel her head whilst she examined me. Thanks God we live in a tiny island where every town and village isn't too far from each other and I would have driven my poor hubby crazy by giving birth in his precious car! :)

my third son came out without pushing, I told the nurse he was coming, she said "no he's not" then looked under the blanket and started pulling wires out of the wall to rush me to the delivery room, too late; my son slid out without anyone to catch him, thank God I was on a bed!

My first was quick, too. We had to leave our car parked at the Emergency Room entrance. When I called in to tell the hospital I was on my way, the gal on the phone told me first time babies don't come out quickly and for me to take a bath. So I did, but I got to the hospital dialated to a 9, 95% effaced, and his head was in a +2 position. I'm due with my second in January, and we're definitely brainstorming what if scenarios in case this one is just like the first one.

reading these it makes me nervous to have a child. it sounds like some doctors are true jerks. Im only 19 though, so it will be a while and during my pregancy (if i do) i hope i find the perfect doctor.
