Best Birthday Presents for a 1-year-old

By Kristen V. of Work It, Mom!

It’s been a month since my baby had his first birthday, and it’s time to call the winners of the Best Birthday Present for a One-Year-Old competition.

First prize goes to the Fisher-Price Baby Gymtastics Bounce and Spin Zebra.  My parents gave this to Henry, and he lovvvvvvves it.  So do his 3-year-old siblings:  the twins are a little big for it, but can still play on it.  It spins around, it bounces, it makes noises and plays songs in response to bouncing, and it’s extremely sturdy:  you really can’t tip it over.  It’s a space commitment, but well worth it—and I don’t take space commitments lightly.

Second prize goes to this Fisher-Price Music Box Teaching Clock, a replica of the clock I had as a child in the ’70s. (This toy is tricky to find online; I found it at a Target store.)  It was stickers over wood then; it’s stickers over plastic now.  It plays the same tune though without the tick-tock sound, and it’s a real turn-knob music box mechanism still, no batteries. I was disappointed because of the tick-tock thing, and because the pictures under the hands stopped turning after only a few days, and because the stickers are already peeling at the edges. In fact, this toy shouldn’t even be eligible for a “successful toy” contest, but Henry loves it so much it’s comical:  he can be screaming and crying, and we get out the clock and he starts smiling and laughing. He is CRAZY for it. And so, unfairly, the poor replica wins second prize.

And third prize goes to the LeapFrog Learn & Groove Alphabet Drum.  Henry is too young to care about the letters, but he loves to hit the drum and hear it call them out:  every time he hits it, it says the next letter in the alphabet and shows it on the drum.  It has other modes, too, for drum sounds and for music.  This toy, too, gets bonus points for doing double-duty as a toddler entertainer.

Come back in a year for the results of the Best Birthday Present for a Two-Year-Old contest.

I bought the Zebra for my daughter 1st birthday too. She's going to be 2 in September but she still absolutely loves the Zebra. Definitely takes up a good amount of space but its worth it to see her crackin up on it! lol

The zebra is great! Little one loves it! We did have to watch when first played on it b/c the saddle part was kind of slippery. But was fun anyway!

The best gift is a savings bond. Let's think ahead. This is only going to be garage sale crap later and we need to be worried about the price of education. I say give savings bonds now and worry about presents when they are old enough to appreciate them! Or at least ask for them.

Kids really have a hard time grasping the concept of the value of a savings bond...especially at one. Maybe a better idea would be an educational gift. Books and some story time with a grown is a favorite with my kids!

it's certainly very important to diligently save for your child's education, but you may have a problem if you can't spring for a couple of toys for your kid's b-day, educational or not! I mean, I don't think it's reasonable to spend a fortune on birthday or christmas presents as opposed to planning for the future, but surely a balance can be reached that doesn't require depriving your child of some fun!

thanks for the gift idea. i am sure my nephew will love it!

thanks for the tip will be a great pressie for her first birthday, just purchased a SMART RIDE ON TRIKE for my 11 month old daughter, its got a safety seat and harness so she cant fall out, along with a handle for me to push her along, she absoulutly loves it, cant stop laughing. As for the bonds comment, surely this is something you would get for your child outwith birthdays and christmas these times are meant for fun things and good memories, yes education is important but dont deprive your child of these just because you may possibly be stayed and boring urself. enjoy ur children enjoying themselves. theirs noything nicer than seeing your child laugh, maybe you should try it !!!

Looked here to see what to get my grandaughter for her 1st birthday. The one thing she would not want is a savings bond. I will put money in her account on another day but for her birthday I will try the zebra. Seeing her smile makes me smile.
