Camp Shine: Get crafty idea no. 3 - Outdoor art

The 80-degree weather in my hood made me feel like staying in the garden all day. Only with kids home on summer break, it means finding ways to get them involved beyond pulling weeds and having water fights (always more of the latter than the former).

If the weather is nice in your area, here's a way to bring crafty projects outdoors: make garden art.

I saw this idea at Sunset magazine's Celebration Weekend and thought it would be a cute project for summer. Also? A fun activity for summer birthday parties and as a gift for grandparents or other special friends.

You can use any small terracotta planter. Run about 12- to 14-inches of 1/2-inch thick rope through it, and tie a knot on the end that will remain inside the pot. Then, let your kids paint the planter using washable acrylic paint. When the paint is dry, an adult should spray it with clear acrylic spray to preserve the color so it doesn't wash away.

What do you do with them? Hang them from a tree branch! Or you can take the rope out and plant a flower in it.

Here's an idea of how you could set up a table to run this activity at a summer birthday party:

Ok, maybe I'm just totally clueless but what exactly are these painted pots with ropes sticking out of them meant to do exactly? Are they bird feeders? I'm lost

I agree with Jennifer, cute but what are they and what are you supposed to do with them?

I thought it was just painting pots to use as pots, and the rope was just to hang it to paint the rim so it doesn't stick to the table when painting, but then I read it again and it is called garden art, so maybe you are just supposed to hang them outside for decorative objects.

to make it a wind chime just put short stick throught the knot in the rope (to be inside the pot)and use fishing line to hang three to four different sized sticks or 1/2 inch diameter copper pipe

How about this idea? I saw someone take old glass windows still in frames and painted on them with stain glass paint and hang them on fences or by cables in frames with the posts in the ground on either side? The kids can say they made it with pride.

If you have a dollar Tree around your house the possibilities are endless for summer crafts. Oriental trading and family fun are awesome too and they have a websites. My sister is keeping my three oldest and four other children at my house and let me tell you we must get creative to keep them from fighting out of sheer boredom. A lot of the crafts they love doing but dont really do anything. Like making spider webs out of sticks and yarn, mobiles out of magazine cut outs, yarn, and a close hanger, they went on a "rock hunt" around the hood and then painted and decorated thier findings, crayon shavings ironed between two pieces of baking wax paper. There are just all sorts of things to do when you get down to it.
