Circumcision: should the government make the decision for you?

Circumcision is a hotly debated and highly personal topic, but no matter what your opinion, the decision as to whether or not to circumcise your son has been up to you. That could change.

Public health officials are considering promoting circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States. The reason? Circumcision has been shown to prevent the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

A formal draft of the proposed recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention won't be out until later this year, but people are already buzzing.

No matter what your view on circumcision, do you think the government should have the authority to mandate whether your son does (or doesn't) get circumcised? Or do you think circumcision is a personal choice that should be left up to parents?

Promoting circumcision and requiring everyone to get their baby circumcised are two very different things. The CDC PROMOTES lots of preventative measures. There is nothing wrong with giving mothers and fathers good information as to the cost/benefits of any procedure. It's still a choice. Getting vacinations is highly promoted, but it's still not required. I don't see the circumcision being mandatory anytime soon. My baby's father will decide if our son gets one. I just don't feel that as a women I have enough experience in the matter to decide and he will be looking to his dad to answer any question about his penis, seeing as how I don't have one(Thank God).

    clearwatertree11,

    ever hear of FGC/M ?

(entirely different reasons for them than circumsision, but government control of everything is hardly a new concept).

Promoting it as a health issue... I don't care. But if it ever become required I would care... only because then for some it's a religious thing.

Besides I have seen articles where it only prevents the spread of H.I.V in heterosexual males and not so much in homosexual males... so until they find that gene how are you going to know it will "protect" you until after the fact.

Encouraging a good health practice based on sound evidence is a far cry from requiring it by law. I would definitely be opposed to mandating this act, but I think it is in the best interest of everyone that baby boys be circumcised - just as I think it is in their best interest to be vaccinated. It's not that nothing can go wrong as a result, but that more goes right than wrong.

Katie B - the reason that circumcision has more protective benefit on heterosexual males is that they are (pretty much) always using their penis during sex. Circumcision makes the penis easier to clean and take care of so viruses are less liklely to cling and cause an infection. In homosexual sex, at least one partner is being penetrated anally. Because the anus does not lubricate like a vagina, penetrating it is more likely to result in microscopic tears in the membranes through which the virus can pass. There is no magical reason why gay men are more likely than straight - just the simple fact that they are more likely to be regularly anally penetrated by their partner than straight men.

I prefer a circumcised male to uncircumcised. If I had a son I would want him to be circumcised - both for his own health and the sake of his future partner (be that partner male or female).

NO NO NO NONO !!!!!!!! my brother was circumcised but my boyfriend and his brother have not. it should not be put into law it should be the parents choice as long as they are cleaning the foreskin and keeping the area bacterial free.

No matter what the reasons there are for or against, the government should have no right to make this mandatory.

I have had my sons circumcised but there is no way that I would want the government making that decision for me. I don't care if they think this is for the good of the people. I think the government needs to stop butting into people's personal lives.

I realize that Mysterious Gryphon... I was just stating that it won't protect ALL males even in the smallest degree.

I have a son... we did opt for the procedure, but it was a very personal decsion.

If someone had told me I HAD to do this, I would have been pissed.

The CDC and docs, already do recommend this... so does the AMA.

This article poses the question, specifically:

Would we be okay with the government Mandating it, or requiring it...

    An overwhelming NO!

The decision to do this, is totally a parentental thing. This should never become mandatory.

And as Katie B pointed out... there is also much much research, that this procedure, doesn't do much at all, to curb STD's to include HIV....

Having sex with someone that has HIV is how you contract it,,, circumcised or not...

A penis is easy to clean, even if the foreskin is in tact...it's called... move it out of the way and scrub...

Mothers do this for their kids when they are babies... and grown men, I think can handle it.

If we use this reasoning.. why not cut off women's labia majora... because they get in the way and "promote" uncleanliness?

I would have gladly left my son's in tact... but my husband really wanted it done, because of asthetic reasons... he remarked about how boys that he was around growing up, who were not circumcised, were hellishly teased... so he insisted on it and I did not argue that point.

But, in most other countries... this practice is not anywhere near as prevelant...

The foreskin is there for a reason... afterall...

It's the natural design of a male penis...

The practice has absolutely NO roots in medical necessity,,,

It first began as a religious practice...

No. It is none of the government's business.
