Clothes for toddler girls -- impractical and a sign of early sexism?

Slim jeans for baby girls?

Slim jeans for baby girls?

I have two sons and going clothes shopping for them has always been a relatively easy 3-step process: Go to Target, buy a stack of $3.99 t-shirts and $5.99 shorts/pants, go home happy.

I've got it easy. But I feel for my friends with young daughters. When you have Beyonce trying to dress little girls in bootylicious fashion you know there's a problem in toddler/preschooler apparel.

There's the issue of dressing toddlers and preschoolers like sexy vixens. Can we all agree that is just wrong?

And then there's the issue that much of the attire sold for girls in this age bracket is completely impractical. Tight, slim jeans for toddler girls who are on the move? Peep toe wedges?

It's enough to make you think that little girls don't like to run around and play.

Mike Adamick over at Strollerderby cries foul. As a dad to a toddler daughter, he believes this issue with girl's clothes is "quiet playground sexism." Boys clothes is made for rough, messy play. Girls clothes? Dainty, fitted and designed for girls to "stand there, twirl their hair and watch" the boys play.

He writes:

"I don't have a problem with pink and can't wait until she can help me sew her dresses. But for now, the kid just likes to play, and play hard. And these Carrie Bradshaw-in-a-romper get-ups don't let her. Worse, they could injure her. When are we going to realize that young girls like to play just as much as young boys?"

Moms and dads to toddler girls -- are you having the same problem finding clothes that allow your little ones to run around and play? Where do you shop and what are some of your top picks?

I don't find it hard at all to find clothes for my 3 year old. However, the little girls section will always have at least one rack of Dresses that are made more for the portrait studio than the playground, because they're cute and frilly and we love to take pictures of children dressed up nicely (no exceotion for the boys here, they have the "Nice Pants and Shirts" section) now there are some clothes that i see that are TOTALLY inapropriate for children but as a parent, it is My Job to make sure that my little girl doesn't wear them (just as I myself don't wear clothes that would make me look like a skank).. I shop mostly at target and walmart for my girl's clothes.

It's no wonder that teenage girls are as sexually active when we start dressing them like sluts since childhood. I'm sorry, but I'm a 30 year woman who has watched the morals of the next generation slide down until they don't seem to exist. I have been saying for at least the last 5-7 years that the trend for clothing for young girls has been too risque. I have seen things that I wouldn't have been comfortable wearing at 18, let alone 10. If we don't do something to change it then 10 will be too old to talk about sex with our kids. We'll have to start in elementary school.

I pick pratical clothes for my 2 years girl, even if I have to shop in the boy area. Better have a girl happy to run and jump in jeans than pretty but bored in dress.

I love..love.. (did I mention LOVE) Granimals clothing for baby/toddler. Cheap, efficient and when it comes to being durable...I haven't had to replace any of the Granimals items except for my kids growing too fast! I used them for my daughter, now 8, my son is still wearing them at 5 and already my 6 month old girl is wearing some of the hand-me-downs from her big sis and some pieces I've bought new. Not to mention that they coordinate everything to match so you can grab a bunch of shirts, shorts and mix them all up and it still matches (good for early morning grab-and-go). Also, Rider's jeans for toddlers are fantastic. My kids are just petite (my son only weighs 35 lbs at five years old) so the slim fit is perfect for their tiny waists.

I get all these at Wal-Mart and Target (Target's brand Circo is great for durable kid's shoes).

Now my 8 year old on the other hand... I have serious issues with some of the clothing they put out for her age group. But since we're talking toddlers, I figured I'd stick to form.

yes i agree that kids fashion is a pain my hubby has a heart attack each time we go to walmart cause it seems the shorts and skirts get shorter all the time, but we as parents have the ultimate choice . i would rather buy a pair of jeans cut them off to a length i feel is appropriat then hem them, than letting my girls run around with half their but cheeks showing. and we wonder why so many kidnappings and child rapes go on look what u r putting your children in people. they r kids not hookers so dress them as such.......

I've been having the HARDEST time finding jeans that wont slide down my 3Yr Old's hips. She loves to play outside with the neighbors and she is very fashion conscience at her young age, but the designer GAP jeans fall down and show her little butt. I really hate it! I definitly have a lot of jogging suits for her (I love Greendog from Macy's) and Targets clothes too. I do find that little girls look up to the big girls and want to wear the same "sexy" clothes. I just dont let her, no matter how much she begs and pleads. I wish more parents would do the same. Kids should not be exhibitionists!

My mom used to dress me up in pretty lil' dresses when i was growing but they would get dirty just as much as my jeans. It's childhood and its callin'! So I say have your girls mess up their dresses! Growing up with three older bros who taught me that i could be tough wether i wear jeans or a dress!

I agree with the article and with you guys. I have a 2 & 5 year old. My 2 year old wears cute little rompers, shorts or stretchy type pants with really cute tees. First and foremost because they can hardly walk/run to begin with why would you put them on heels & tight jeans anyway. I'm 26 and I hate tight jeans!

    I AGREE Target & Macys & Old Navy comfy brands. All jeans she gets bought are given away:{

I have to disagree with this article on some points. It's actually pretty easy to find practical clothes for girls. The conflict comes when they get to kindergarten, first grade and beyond. Then you have moms who dress their kids like vixens and others who dress their girls more conservatively. Sometimes its hard to strike a balance. I want my daughters to fit in, but not to look trashy or mature beyond their years. I tend to dress them more conservatively. I think some of the designer clothes like the Beyonce line is completely ridiculous for young children.

BTW...I have to buy slim jeans for my oldest because she is indeed slim and the regular jeans are so baggy they fall off her butt.

Oh My Gosh....don't get me started on little girl's clothing. I am fortunate enough to have a gorgeous little darling girl who just turned 6 in February, the unfortunate part is that she wears a girls 10/12. Do you know how hard it is to find age appropriate clothes in that size that a kindergartener can wear!! I wouldn't wear 3/4 of the stuff I find and I'm almost 40! Target and Children's Place are both my savior stores! Children's Place is still very cute all the way up to the larger girl's sizes, even the skirts are knee length. Without these stores, I would probably have learned to sew my child's clothing by now. Unfortunately though, the only way to change this ever troubling trend toward girlyliscious clothing is for enough of us moms to stop buying them. They would not be in the stores on the front racks if someone wasn't supporting them being there. We moms need to take a stand and stop being afraid of our 10, 12 and even 6 year olds who whine about not having the latest fashions! Spend your money in stores that support your values and fashion sense! Trust me, these moms who are letting their precious little girls dress like the Pussycat Dolls have it coming when these same sweet beings are 16 and sneaking out the window in the middle of the night to meet their 30 year old boyfriends. I think I would rather put the work in now and do some mall and internet surfing for good clothes, rather than spend my retirment money on counseling and halfway houses later on! Let's all do our part to not let merchandisers dictate what we let our children wear!!! Sorry about my soapbox, but as you can imagine, picturing my 6 year old in daisy duke shorts and a criss cross halter top make's me shudder! So, just remember one thing, if your voices are not being listened to, your money will always be heard! Good Luck to all!
