Do Fashion Plates and Barbies Bring Back Great Childhood Memories?

As a 30-something mother of two little boys, I don't get to play with dolls very often. When I visit my neighbor who has two little girls under the age of five, I walk into a pink fantasy land of glittery, girlie wonders. Barbies, princesses, baby dolls, My Pretty Ponies, Polly Pockets - it's awesome! Were I 20 years younger, you could never make me leave that house.

As a little girl, I loved two things. Fashion Plates and Barbies. My younger sister and I played with Fashion Plates all of the time. In fact, we named each 'plate' girl head and then renamed her when we switched her outfit. We had about 30 fictitious names committed to memory. When we got bored rubbing the girls onto paper, we started writing books. There were plots, personalities, do-gooders, evil characters, etc. We spent hours and hours coloring them and laughing at their silliness. I'm pretty sure my mom still has pages upon pages of our creations stored in a dusty forgotten box somewhere. Boy, would I love to see those again!

My other childhood obsession was Barbie Dolls. My sister and I each had about 15-20 Barbies and two small suitcases full of outfits, coats, dresses, gowns and teeny tiny shoes. To save time, we referred to single pieces of clothing as "clo" - pretty innovative, huh? I probably played with Barbie Dolls until I was 13 or 14 years old. That's how simple my life used to be. My main concern was whether 'Kim' could wear her ruffled yellow dress with her matching yellow shoes. The vacuum cleaner was not a friend to Barbie's shoes.

We had winking Barbies, posing Barbies that came with a camera, Malibu Barbies, fake Barbies, Ken Dolls, fake Ken Dolls, the Barbie dog that was really really fluffy... the list goes on and on. We named each one and gave them a story and their own special personality. 'Sue' was my sister's most prized Barbie and 'Kim' was mine. 'Julie' was the most hated Barbie, 'April' was the ditz and 'Star' was the unlucky stunt Barbie that got stuck in trees on more than one occasion.

We had the townhouse and the yellow corvette, jeep and the horse trailer. Ah, those were the days. We certainly had lots of Barbie stuff, but we usually bought it ourselves with our birthday money. Aside from the toys, what I remember most is the laughter. The completely spontaneous genuine 100% heartfelt goofy loud laughter. My sister and I had some of the greatest times ever playing upstairs in a room covered with Barbie paraphernalia.

When I think about my boys, both of whom celebrated birthdays recently, I hope and pray they have wonderful memories of their childhood too. As grown men with children of their own, I wish for certain toys to spark a flood of delicious memories. Because in a crazy complicated world, great childhood memories may be the best gift of all.

My daughter is now 7 and very much into my little ponies. I was so obbseed with them as a child. I would play for hours at a time with my neighbor accross the street julie. The thing i remember the most is that our little brothers would always want to play with us. We would make them be the evil people who we would capture and put in jail for the whole game. It was great. everytime i see her play with them i think about those times.

I fondly remember playing Barbies with my sister although she used to occassionally pull a "fast one" on me since I was a little younger and definitely not wiser. One time, she tricked me into making my Barbies live in a cardboard box while hers had a plush penthouse! How unfair. Seriously though, those are some of my favorite memories and I loved this article.

Reading this story brings back so many memories. I'm 20, and I have a sister who's 16, and she is the best friend anyone could ask for. I remember sitting for hours and hours playing with barbies, legos, fashion plates, little people, and littlest pet shop toys. Now that we're older, we still play with out little sisters, 7 and 4. It's just so much fun to sit there and be a kid again, not worry about the bills or work or what to make for dinner. I remember funny little things about how we used to play, we would mix up all the barbies so no one could choose the prettiest one, same with the littlest pet shop, the little deer was both our favorite. Spending forever making the perfect lego house and playing for hours. Setting up the little people town. Just little things that were so much fun. Those were the days.

Wow, I had the townhouse, too! With the working elevator!! Many dramatic, romantic love triangles played out on those floors, especially since I only had like two Kens and like a dozen Barbies. I had the yellow Corvette, too! And I believe the winking Barbie was Western Barbie, and she had her autograph stamp. Wow...memories.

I had the bubble hair Barbie, not the pony tail Barbie and Ken's fuzzy hair wore off over time so my mom shoe polished his head. They were a funky couple, to say the least. A few years ago, my mom opened her cedar chest and there were Barbie, Ken and Midge stored for decades in their vinyl wardrobe box with all the hand made clothes my mom had made for them over the years, including a red knitted coat with angora trim that is still the bomb! Nowadays, each of them sit in their own Barbie cars that I've picked up at Goodwill and turned into planters that are strategically placed around the house. Women always comment about their own Barbie days when they first see them; men just ask why I don't have a G.I. Joe in a tank. If I could find one, he's join the road rally. Thanks Mom (who was the queen of tossing things out)for saving such wonderful memories for me!

Oh this brings back so many memories. I used to LOVE Fashion Plates. I think I was around 11 years old when I got a Fashion Plates set for Christmas and it overshadowed every single other gift I received that year. I didn't care about the bike or the stereo, I was really digging Fashion Plates.

You could be describing my childhood! I still have my Fashion Plates and refuse to get rid of them because they were my favorite toy. I must have had an older set though because the box doesn't look like the one pictured. I even had the extra set of plates. I got mine around 1980 and it's hilarious too look at the God awful clothes and haistyles they had. One of them is a pair of culottes!

My sister and I also had the Barbie townhouse. I remember we had the Darci fashion dolls which were taller than Barbie. I also had Jane West which was a cowgirl doll. She looked old so she was always Barbie's mother. I had the Cheryl Ladd Charlie's Angel doll and since she was small, she was always the teenaged daughter. Strawberry Shortcake dolls were always the children. Dad was Western Ken who now that I think about it, looked like he belonged in the Village People! My Babrie family was definitely weird. I also remember having Barbies who were always the mean characters. I think my sister and I definitely did not lack in imagination.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories!!

Oh. My. Gosh. It is so much fun to see all of these memories about fashion plates and Barbies! I have to mention to Disgruntled that we used Strawberry Shortcake dolls as children too!!! My sister had Lemon and I had Apple. I actually thought of the name "Apple" for a girl before Gwyneth did! :-) Another funny memory...I made my sister's Barbies live in the horse trailer so my Barbies could live in the townhouse alone. That being said, I also invented the first trailer trash Barbie!

OMG! My sister and I had the infamous townhouse (with the pull-cord elevator,)the Corvette, the dog, the clothes... and, of course, Skipper! Each Barbie had her own name (Gloria, Denise, Debra..) and her own personna- and some of them had super powers (like flying,) some repelled off sofa cliffs, and some drove the ambulance rescuing people. I remember my sister's favorite Barbie was married to Steve Austin (the Bionic Man,) and mine was married to 12" Luke Skywalker. Oh, the memories...

And I sure wish I had my fashon plates set for my daughter and step-daughter. They would love it!
