Do I have to get an epidural with a hospital birth?

More than one friend has told me that it's virtually impossible to deliver in a hospital and not get the epidural and that I should basically accept that. Is this true? — just get the epidural

Dear Just,

Women do have non-medicated births in hospitals. They really do. It happens. It's happened to people we know. It's happened to people we know who had hard labors, back labors, long labors, hellish inductions and lousy labor support. So it's not impossible.

But going to the hospital and not taking the epidural can be like going to a pizza place on a low-carb diet. It can be frustrating. As one woman we know put it, "the only way I won't get an epidural is to be far the f*ck away from it." This is one reason women who are adamant about avoiding medication plan to give birth at home or in birthing centers where epidurals are not available.

The epidural is the hospital's big offering when it comes to pain relief. When the agony kicks in, the resident will probably not suggest changing positions, massage your lower back and offer gentle encouragement. There probably will not be a tub. Unless you brought a birthing ball, you won't have one to rock on. And the fetal monitor will likely be strapped around you for some period of time, limiting your ability to lean or sway or rock through contractions. But you will be offered medication. Probably more than once. The hospital staff wants to help, after all. And they all see, time after time, the relief on their patients' faces when the drugs kick in.

With my first, I was in labor for hours. The entire day before- until I had her at 3:16 pm the next afternoon. Last week with my son, he came a day ahead. Through both I delt with the pain until right before my c-section. I recieved my first dose of meds (hurting due to potocin) at 1:30 pm w/ my daughter. At 2:00- an Epi, and at 2:25- a spinal block for emergancy delievery. With my son last week, I recieved the Spinal block right before they layed me on the OR table. If it weren't for the c-sections- I still would have asked for an EPI. My pain was so horrible from wanted to hold out on pain meds- my mom begged me to ask for an EPI- and she gave birth naturally. She told me it was bringing her too much pain for me not to ask for the EPI.

I was in labor 10 hours before I accepted the offer for an epidural. I was offered one about 5 or so hours in and when I turned it down, I wasn't judged or made to feel bad. I was told the offer for it was there if I wanted it so long as I wasn't too far along. My nurses were wonderful too. If I wanted to walk around move around or get up it wasn't a problem. I think it depends on your hospital and you knowing before you go into labor what kind of delivery you want to have. I would say it's unfair to assume all hospitals are the same. They are really as good as their staff.

I had an unmedicated hospital birth-but the epidural was definitely pushed. I was only there for 2 hours of my labor before baby was born and no less than 5 people asked me if I wanted one, and that was w/ a birth plan. It depends on the hospital. Like doctors some hospitals have amuch higher epiduaral rate than others. Average is about 60-65%. The hospital I was at had an 80% rate.

I haven't decided if I want one yet or not. That's something that I'll talk to the doctors about during one of my future appointments. I'd like to have as natural as a birth as possible, but without being completely miserable at the same time.

I think it'd be nice to have a home birth, but unfortuantely my insurance isn't going to cover it after October of this year. My due date is in January. So that eliminates that option.

My mother had an epidural with my brother and she had periods where she would get shooting pains and then numbness on one whole side of her body. I did not want to deal with that for the rest of my life. So I refused to even sign the paperwork for the epidural for the births of all three of my children. I felt that it was not worth the side effects. My first two were induced. Being induced is so much worse than natural births. My first wasn't too bad but the second was horrible. My third was a breeze, it wasn't induced. They do push epidurals but even though they asked me several times if I wanted to sign the papers before it got too late (just as an option) I refused. Even as bad as my second birth was I never regreted my decision.

    Just say no... to drugs!

There is so much you will miss out on if you are medicated. I didn't want to forget a second. You will be in pain. You will feel misery. It's childbirth. It is a small sacrifice to make for your baby. And once the baby is out, it's pure bliss. It's such a rush!

my hospital had birthing balls, a tub, squat bars and embraced the mother's decision to use or not use an epidoral. I had a somewhat harrowing labor, but was constantly amazed by the excellent care I received...I hope all hospitals would strive to be that way.

I gave birth to 3 sons. With each I had an epidural. I did not want to tear.

The doctors took such great care in making sure I left with an even tighter coochie than I came in with.

    Great doctors!!!!!

I would never get another epidural because I had the spinal headaches and I keep on telling my nurses I have a really BIG HEADACHE!!They keep giving things for pain and I keep saying it ain't working. When we got home the first four days my husband had to take care of our baby, I felt so bad. I couldn't eat, sleep, and talk...I couldn't do anything I was getting sick because I was in so much pain and I finally went to the doctor and I got a blood patch. The blood patch really hurt but my headaches were so much bettter. It took about a month and they pretty much went away.I thank God everyday for my headaches to be gone ,that was the worst pain ever. But some people do just find with epidurals but I will never get one again.
