Fearless family travel: A pocket game that's b-a-n-a-n-a-s

We're leaving for our family vacation in three months...and I'm already working on Operation Keep My Kids Occupied on a Plane for Six Hours.

First on my list is finding games that are small, easy to pack and simple to play in the air. I'm a big fan of Think-ets because they're super tiny, inspire my kids' imaginations and, well, are just plain cute.

I'm feeling the same way about Bananagrams -- 144 tiny Scrabble-like pieces that fit into a little banana bag. What do you do with them? Play one of about six different spelling games that can go wicked fast or slow and steady. As part of each game, you have to say silly things that will make your kids laugh. And that's half the fun.

Okay, on to the other important stuff. Bananagrams are perfect for the five-and-older crowd, who have the interest and patience to learn how to play a new game and can spell simple words. The pieces come in a small banana-shaped pouch, so the game is easy to store in a backpack or mom's purse. It's reasonably priced at US$14.95. And I'd be willing to spend that kind of cash on a game that my kids can play just about anywhere.

(Side note: this would also make a cute stocking stuffer. Ack! Holiday talk already!)

LOVE IT we play every day! The best is that the kids are expanding their spelling skills... and I love the challenge and with all that it is a quick game that you can take 15 minutes to play anywhere!

Another great one: shallow baking sheets in the car for long trips. They make perfect laptop workspaces and when not in use, they slip under seats, between seats, behind seats...you got it, pretty much anywhere. The short sides keep things from rolling off and onto teh floor, too, like the Banangram pieces.

We've even added felt to the backs of them and then used cut-out felt pieces to make little play scenes. The possibilities are endless with that!

They're great for meals on laps in the car, too!

I don't know how old your kids are, but what about the travel versions of Connect Four and Trouble? Wait, do they even still sell those...guess I'm telling my age, lol!

This is the greatest game. It has replaced scrabble in our house! This game is a must for the board game lover!!!
