How Dolls Helps a Child

Dolls come in vast varieties. There are baby dolls, big dolls, small dolls, dolls of plastic, wood and stuffing. Dolls are terrific teaching tools. They are perfect for fostering nurturing, pretend play and role playing.
Dolls with hair and clothing can help with your child fine motor skills. Through dolls, we can gain insight into the inner world of preschoolers and young children. Their experiences can be reflected on how they play, talk and act with the doll. For example, a child will act out baby-care scenarios if he/she has a new sibling. Children will also express their own social issues when they play in a pair or in groups with their dolls. You should always pay attention to doll play, as it is often a child's way of expressing hopes, fears, and desires.

The best time to buy a doll is during their preschool years. During their preschool years your child begins to act out stories from both their fantasies and real life and look to dolls to act as their proxies. This is an age when it is perfectly appropriate for both girls and boys to play with dolls. A little boy might well see his father in a nurturing role, so it is normal for him to act that scenario with a doll.
As a parent, a doll can be used to model behaviors you would like to see. You may use the doll to demonstrate empathy or concern. Always remember that dolls make terrific teaching tools.

And here everyone thought I was being weird for letting my son play with his sisters' baby dolls. He loves to play with them and will throw a fit if the girls won't let him play with them. He loves babies and this helps out with knowing how to act around babies as well.

My 2 year old daughter will put her babydoll in timeout in the corner and tell her "don't hit." When she has decided that she learned her lesson, she pulls her out and tells her to say "sorry," and then gives her a kiss. It is too cute!
