How much did you spend on your kid's Halloween costume?

I just plunked down thirty bucks for my boy's Halloween costume. It's a Batman jumpsuit with all the gear in one tidy little plastic package, and for that, I am grateful. I know how much he and I both love to accessorize and I know that $30 could become $50 in the (ahem) bat of an eyelash.

He was set on being a superhero like the other boys in his preschool class, which made ordering up the costume easier than putting together one like we did when I was a kid. That DIYness showed up in the conversation my mom and I had with my four-year old son the other day as we suggested a long list of ideas inspired by the dress-up box at our house and the one my parents still have from when I was a kid. Pirate? Chef? Firefighter? Police officer? Gorilla? Clown? Cowboy?

Even after each of those was quickly rejected, my mom kept on. She's scrappy and creative and I could see her putting costumes together in her mind from little bits and pieces from all of our closets. She made my childhood Halloweens even more fun this way, making our costume assembly into something of a scavenger hunt to find the perfect scarf to match a poodle skirt, a pair of big sunglasses or something to make muscles on Superman. Even if we bought some parts of our get-up, those were usually small accessories or new face paint, not the whole $30 shebang. Of course, back in those days, the packaged costumes were plastic and tied uncomfortably in the back (ugh, remember those?) and more of a convenience than something enticing to little trick-or-treaters.

It was a great way to get ready for Halloween. Even though I loved the way styled ourselves for Halloween when I grew up, things are different now.  It is easy to buy a cute costume with lots of detail and appeal and just be done with it. No rummaging around, no last-minute rush to get just one more special touch.

Sure, my boy will look adorable and be exactly the superhero he envisioned. I will be less stressed about the holiday and be happy he is so thrilled with the molded abs and big, flappy wings. We will have all this, yes. But it cost us.

How much did you spend on your kid's Halloween costume?

Are you cutting back this year during tight economic times? Is it worth it to DIY your child's costume?

i think you should only spend about 20 dollers or less on a holloween costume because they are only going to use it once unless they have a sibling that can use it next year

My son is going to be batman also. I spent $10 at Walmart on batman PJs that come with a cape (so he can wear them all year round. $1 for a pair of black gloves, and less than $3 for a batman mask... not bad for under $15

I spent 25.00 on ebay for an inflatable firetruck costume... my 3yo wanted to be a firetruck (not a fireman on spiderman but a truck). To complete the costume we are using a yellow jumpsuit, a fireman's helment that we found at a flea market, and I need to find rubber boots and duct tape a reflective stripe.

I spent $1.00 on my daughter's costume. We were at a resale shop that benefits disabled children and they had a cheerleader's costume in her size. She has pom poms from one of her cousins and she already has a long sleeve white shirt to go underneath. I got soooo lucky this year!

I try to keep it around $30 but even then, I try to get things for atleast part of the costume that will work for the rest of the year too. This year my son chose to be Thomas the Train. I spent $14.99 on that and b/c it's sort of a vest looking slip on thing,it shows the clothing, so he will be wearing a white shirt ($4.99, blue jeans $9.99. (aside from the slip over Thomas the Train thing, everything else will be used this winter!) Oh, the costume also came with a hat, he can wear that for fun while playing. Works for me!

I spent more this year than ever before, 26.99 for costume and wig. Previous years we have had very good luck @ value village or good will, but not this year, so we hit Party City. My 9 yr old daughter had seen the catalog from there, and everything she wanted was over 40$! No way! So, I told her our price limit, which was 25$, found a great "ice princess" costume on sale for 21$, all accessories included, minus wig. Score!

you shouldnt have to spend more than 100$ but those costumes from disneyland or down town disney are outrageous and it comes with wands and shoes and hat and more! so i think its a great time for kids to make believe and i love halloween myself. this year i am spending no more than 30$

I nearly choked when I read $100.00. Never in a million years for any reason. I try to spend less than $10 .00 per kid per costume. Some of my kids' best and cutest costumes have been made at home from things we mostly had on hand, gotten at goodwill & garage sales, or bought at a store on sale for $10.00 or less. Wal-Green's has some great sales. I loved it when my kids were small and I got to chose what they were going to be for Halloween.
