How much did you spend on your kid's Halloween costume?

I just plunked down thirty bucks for my boy's Halloween costume. It's a Batman jumpsuit with all the gear in one tidy little plastic package, and for that, I am grateful. I know how much he and I both love to accessorize and I know that $30 could become $50 in the (ahem) bat of an eyelash.

He was set on being a superhero like the other boys in his preschool class, which made ordering up the costume easier than putting together one like we did when I was a kid. That DIYness showed up in the conversation my mom and I had with my four-year old son the other day as we suggested a long list of ideas inspired by the dress-up box at our house and the one my parents still have from when I was a kid. Pirate? Chef? Firefighter? Police officer? Gorilla? Clown? Cowboy?

Even after each of those was quickly rejected, my mom kept on. She's scrappy and creative and I could see her putting costumes together in her mind from little bits and pieces from all of our closets. She made my childhood Halloweens even more fun this way, making our costume assembly into something of a scavenger hunt to find the perfect scarf to match a poodle skirt, a pair of big sunglasses or something to make muscles on Superman. Even if we bought some parts of our get-up, those were usually small accessories or new face paint, not the whole $30 shebang. Of course, back in those days, the packaged costumes were plastic and tied uncomfortably in the back (ugh, remember those?) and more of a convenience than something enticing to little trick-or-treaters.

It was a great way to get ready for Halloween. Even though I loved the way styled ourselves for Halloween when I grew up, things are different now.  It is easy to buy a cute costume with lots of detail and appeal and just be done with it. No rummaging around, no last-minute rush to get just one more special touch.

Sure, my boy will look adorable and be exactly the superhero he envisioned. I will be less stressed about the holiday and be happy he is so thrilled with the molded abs and big, flappy wings. We will have all this, yes. But it cost us.

How much did you spend on your kid's Halloween costume?

Are you cutting back this year during tight economic times? Is it worth it to DIY your child's costume?

We only have one child that is still young enough for trick or treating. This year he is being a fireman, and i bought the costume on Costume Express for $49.99. I know it was a little much, but I'm only buying for 1 child, and I think they should enjoy themselves. Afterall it only comes once a year, and they look forward to it so much.

I think that it is good to get creative with your children and let them try to piece together an original costume. To many parents throw money at things for a quick fix. Kids that are of the age of trick-or-treating are usually not to picky. What are we teaching our children?

I have 3 kids that I have to have costumes for and we don't have a lot of money at all. I do try and do the DIY costumes and actually they have been really cute. One year I did Dopey from the seven dwarfs....I got the most compliments on it and my son looked adorable! It was cheap and fun to do. I think this year I will be making my 1 yr Simon from the chipmunks! It will be easy, cute and cheap. Honestly if you have money and you want to spend a lot that's your decision, but if you have to decided between the one time a yr holiday or buying food....you have to buy the food. I feel that you should also teach your children that you don't always have to spend a lot to look fantastic or in any other situation! After all they only wear it maybe 3 hrs.

I spent $50 for a peacock costume and tights for my little girl and I'm glad I did. I didn't want to spend SO much...but my daughter wanted to be a peacock and this costume was TOO cute. As to it only being worn once...not true! She already wears it whenever she can and "flies" around the house. I admire those that are able to craft diy costumes...but not all of us are crafty or have the time to put something together.

I actually only spent about $7.00 on my daughters costume. She's going to be a baby's first dolly (matching her exact first dolly). I found fleece on clearance that matched the original dolls dress perfectly. Sewed together the nightgown, cut out a few felt flowers, sewed them into place, two pink pig tailed ribbons in her hair and presto! A quick, easy and origial AND cheap costume!

My two year old girls Lady Bug costume cost $20. I had to get leggings and a leotard to wear under it (in case it's cold) which added another $20 Plus black sparkly shoes that cost 9.99 at wal-mart. So all in all $50. But she is worth it. She will only be 2 once and the pictures will be priceless forever.
