I've been saying "Thank you", but some people give me a weird and awkward look as if that's not what I was supposed to say. I guess it might seem as if I'm trying to take credit for God/Allah/Mother Nature/whoever's work or the baby's cuteness or smarts, etc. But, I want to be polite and acknowledge that baby and I are pleased that they have said that.
What kinds of comments would you expect in return? Or what do other parents usually say in return?

Report Abuseif the child could talk just tell the child to say thank you.eg."say thank you to the lady michelle".
You can also reply by saying she is just like her daddy,or i know thats right she reminds me of myself.

Report AbuseI know how you feel about saying "Thank you". It is just awkward. When people tell me that my son is cute, I say "He knows!" I am serious, he knows he is adorable and he works it. He flirts all the time. Then when they tell him he is cute, he gets all shy. That just adds to the cuteness!

Report AbuseIsn't Thank you the proper response to a compliment?
Besides... I think you should take "some" credit for the baby being cute! It was half of your genes that made the baby cute...LOL

Report Abuse"Thank you" is perfectly appropriate! You are speaking up for your child and being a great mom by introducing social skills. That weird look you're getting from some people is their problem, not yours. =D

Report AbuseDon't feel bad about saying thank you, your child can't talk, and your child came from you, so you can take credit! Since my daughter's starting to talk, I'm trying to teach her to say thank you, so I just tell her "say thank you" or "say hi" or something along those lines.

Report AbuseWell my daughter is just a tad cuter than Superlativity's, but I would agree with her assessment.
