In Search Of The Perfect Infant Carrier

Okay "World O' Moms", I have a question for you.  I'm looking to buy an infant carrier and/or sling and was looking for some good recommendations.  This is what I need:

  • I live in Texas so one that will keep both me and my child relatively cool would be good
  • I have chronic back pain, so I need a carrier that will support my back and distribute the weight of the baby
  • I'm also "endowed" with certain large "attributes" so I'll need one that will accommodate for that
  • I would also like to not spend a small fortune

Anyone? Anyone?  I'm counting on you Internet.

I have heard that an Ergo Baby baby carrier is good because it distributes the weight of the baby on your hips as well as your shoulders, thereby taking some of the stress off your back. I plan on buying one because I have certain issues that the Baby Bjorn and slings haven't helped with. Namely, I'm short (5'1") and my baby is getting increasingly difficult to carry since these carriers either pull on my back or shoulders uncomfortably. It wasn't an issue at first when he was tiny. Now he's a giant baby and I can't use them at all without my back and shoulders screaming at me.

A Mom that I know recommended the Ergo and I looked at their website and liked what they had to say. They are pricey but if it will work and last longer than three months, it's worth it!

    Good luck!

Price range - hmmm, I guess I'd like something $75 or less - is that possible?

The Ergo is a little more than you want to spend, at $90 + another $23 for the infant insert (with which you can use the carrier from day 1), but I really do recommend it. Do some research, maybe you can get one at auction online for a bit of a discount. I also have some weight up top and a back that needs a little extra care, and I've never been uncomfortable. The whole unit is cotton, as well, which should help with your Texas heat!

I tried the standard "stiff" baby carriers, but they hurt my back after only a few minutes. After the birth of my second child, I purchased the Ulitimate Baby Wrap... it is great!!! I can walk around with no back strain at all. It is made entirely of cotton, so that should help to keep things cool. Also, great for the well-endowed. Price is only $39.99 at BabiesRUs.

Read the reviews on babiesrus.com. You will find some people (like myself) who find it extremely helpful, as well as others who can't seem to figure it out. It only takes a couple of times before you are a pro! I think the company's website that makes the wrap is parentsofinvention.com. I love this wrap, and my little sweetie seems to as well. Hope this helps and good luck!

I recommend the Moby wrap. It is incredible. It's similar to the Ultimate baby wrap but I like the material and color options better. It's only about $35-40. You can find it online www.mobywrap.com It will take some getting used. If it seems too complicated, I second the Ergo.

Beco Carrier is amazing! You can use it on front or on back, I still put my 24 lb. son in it for hours at a time. I have had other carriers & this is by far my favorite & most used.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention it is more expensive, but I can now justify the $120 price tag after using it. You may be able to find it cheaper.

Thanks for all of your input. I went to a local Sling Shop here in Dallas and purchased an Ergo baby carrier AND a Moby Wrap. Grandma helped out with the cost. I'm excited about my purchase and feel that I've made the right choice. Thanks!!
