Burger King is selling kids' meals with a SpongeBob related remix of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." In the latest commercial from their bizarre ad campaign, the King sings about his love for square butts, and his desire to "get with" SpongeBob while ladies shake their booties.
Here's the kicker: the ad was made in partnership with the children's television station, Nickelodeon.
Susan Linn, the director of the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood said: "It's bad enough when companies use a beloved media character like SpongeBob to promote junk food to children, but it's utterly reprehensible when that character simultaneously promotes objectified, sexualized images of women."
Update: The Campaign for Commercial Free-Childhood has launched a letter-writing campaign against the ad, encouraging parents to ask Burger King and Nickelodeon to pull the ad. Both companies say the ad is targeted at adults. Seriously?
After seeing the original "Baby Got Back" video nearly 100 times in our lifetimes and now viewing it as more campy than objectifying, we were a little numb and then confused upon first hearing the jingle. Square butts? This is insane! What are they talking about?! But bringing SpongeBob into the ad definitely makes it appear that it's trying to get then attention of kids.
Take a look at the BK ad, and tell us: Would you want your kids seeing this commercial?

Report AbuseI think that if you let your children watch SPONGEBOB, then, yes, it's ok. Personally, I LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL!!!! So does my 5 year old. She thinks it's hilarious. Of course, children these days are too young to know the original song to correlate the two together. I think it's fine.
People need to ease up. Burger King is fine in moderation and I don't think young children are going to be saying "DAMN MOM! SHE'S HOT!" It's a commercial. Get over it.

Report AbuseI don't see anything wrong with it for adults, but I wouldn't want my kid to watch it. I think this is part of what is wrong with kids anymore. They watch these commercials with girls shaking they're butts right in front of them. They grow up thinking that it's normal. They think that any girl who isn't willing to degrade themselves like this isn't worth their time.

Report AbuseOh my goodness!!!! Yes that commercial is absolutely hilarious for someone who grew up and heard that song/saw the video when they were teenagers. That commercial is terribly inappropriate for children. In a world where we find this acceptable for our five and six year old children to watch, is it really any surprise that sex offenders are getting younger and younger. After all, we as adults are throwing sex in their faces. Even if children don't know the original song, "the King" is still right there showing off hind-ends and modeling inappropriate behavior.

Report AbuseOMG, we sing the original song in our house all the time, and this commercial was just the icing on the hilarious cake!! I just about rofl when it first came on. We are big Spongebob fans here, and often quote the show, as well. (my kids are ages 10,8,and6)
I don't find the commercial inappropriate at all. Kids love anything to do with butts and aren't seeing the commercial for the sexual aspects at all. For Pete's sake, it's all about Spongebob SQAREpants...Obviously his butt is square too!!
