Is the Sir Mix-a-Lot Burger King commercial too much for kids?

Burger King is selling kids' meals with a SpongeBob related remix of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." In the latest commercial from their bizarre ad campaign, the King sings about his love for square butts, and his desire to "get with" SpongeBob while ladies shake their booties.

Here's the kicker: the ad was made in partnership with the children's television station, Nickelodeon.

Susan Linn, the director of the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood said: "It's bad enough when companies use a beloved media character like SpongeBob to promote junk food to children, but it's utterly reprehensible when that character simultaneously promotes objectified, sexualized images of women."

Update: The Campaign for Commercial Free-Childhood has launched a letter-writing campaign against the ad, encouraging parents to ask Burger King and Nickelodeon to pull the ad. Both companies say the ad is targeted at adults. Seriously?

After seeing the original "Baby Got Back" video nearly 100 times in our lifetimes and now viewing it as more campy than objectifying, we were a little numb and then confused upon first hearing the jingle. Square butts? This is insane! What are they talking about?! But bringing SpongeBob into the ad definitely makes it appear that it's trying to get then attention of kids.

Take a look at the BK ad, and tell us: Would you want your kids seeing this commercial?

that commercial is hilarious for people who've heard the original song and saw the original video, but for kids who just understand spongebob is in the commercial and only see the sexualized images? it's a little innappropriate as they wouldn't know the reference for the video.

The kids and I love this commercial! The youngest is 2 and he gets up and dances and shakes his butt. Have we really started to take ourselves THIS seriously? If anything it helps us be able to laugh and let loose, and maybe even laugh at ourselves. Imagine that.

Honestly I love to have fun and enjoy myself but respecting children and others is important to me, people can have fun without being perverted, these are children, what kind of example is that setting to young innocent minds , grow up adults!

I was totally outraged when I saw this commercial. What does Sponge Bob have to do with women shaking their azzes on TV for all kids to see. What took the cake tho was when Mix-a-Lot looks into the camera and says... "Booty is booty." Now try to make that kid friendly.

For all those parents that have something againstthis commercial get a grip. Also get rid of your Shrek DVD too if you own a copy. have you forgotten that donkey sings the original song on part of the dvd? And you might as well not let your kids watch Nickelodeon anymore, they have jokes about butts every now and then. SPongebob has shown his a bunch of times. Its not like they are doing any thing sexual with it. ITs a butt everyone has one. THe butts in the commercial were square too . in real life people dont have square butts.

This is just like the Janet Jackson thing. everyone getting into an uproar about something not that big. I lived overseasmost of my life in a military family. On tv over there nudity isnt a big thing . They dont make it look like a bad thing. Here in the states you get all the bible thumpin morons in an uproar saying its a sin. If your kid asks a bout a body part just tell them the truth , then it wont seem like such a big idea to them. When the Janet Jackson thing happened my 5 year old daughter asked why she did that. I told her that Janet probably has an album coming out and wanted more publicity for it. My daughter then went oh ok can I watch cartoons now?

When you try to keep things from people it just makes them want it more. Think aboutwhen youre a kid at Christmas. You could see presents for you but couldnt open them yet ,didnt a lot of us try to sneak peeks at what we were getting? IF you tell your kids stay out of the cookie jar doesnt that make them want those cookies even more. When someone is trying to ban a book ,movie ,music ,etc, Doesnt that make you want to find out about that thing even more. Remember when Dan quayle attacked Ice -Ts metal band Bodycount for the Copkiller song and said how bad it was. That album started flying off the shelves when the week before Quayle spoke up it was on its way out of the charts. But he said it was bad and everyone ran out and got a copy.

SO what Im tryingto say is dont make big deals about goofy little cartoons. Remember its a cartoon sponge and people with big fake square butts. Just realize that this is not going to damage your chld for life. Also in closing theres a lot worse stuff they could be seeing on TV. Why not one of these nights let em sit down with you and watch the news and explain some of that stuff to them. The square butts wont seem like such a problem after that.

I don't find this commercial inappropriate at all, infact I think its quite funny! Another poster said that the odds of a child that young remembering the original song are very low and I think that's important. Most children are going to be considering the sponge bob/ burger king link not the booty link. I think its more harmful to run over and mute the tv right when this comes on then to just accept it for what it is and get over it. Your kids are going to wonder alot more about what is going on when you run off and block their view or hearing of this commercial.

You know, when I saw this post-I ran straight to it because I thought for sure in some way, we'd have some adult(s) saying, FINALLY! Yes, this is too much-for children. But, I see that now, there are no more TRUE adults in the sense that we want to protect our children, don't want them to grow up too fast, want our children to stay children for as long as they can and everything they show or sell is not entertaining and meant to be worshipped.

I saw this ad for the first time, I believe, on Sunday. I looked at my fiancee and we shook our heads. I said, this is ridiculous, this is not for children. For those of you, who believe children don't know, you're dumber than I thought. When do we say enough is enough. The powers that be read these comments and when they see everyone is happy and thinks the ad is soooooo hilarious, they will take their chances and go a little further. We have no morals and/or common sense any more. I can only assume that the parents (and I use the term loosely) are young. Gotta be. And that's one reason why this world is going to hell in a handbasket. Parent and child, sitting there laughing at that stupid commercial. I wonder if it would be so funny if it was your child up there. And trust, I'm not an old fogey...I listen to Hip Hop (well, old school-the REAL Hip Hop) and I do remember this song...remember where I was when I first heard it....but somethings are just not appropriate and it's ok to say so. We've got to do better people.

OMG! This commercial is hilarious! The last I knew, 7 year olds would laugh their square pants off at the fact that people (with square pants) are shakin' their square bootys. I doubt that the kids will sit down and analyze this commercial the way that the actual video was analyzed 20 years ago. Let's all get up and shake our square bootys in our square pants to this one! I think our kids would have fun watching us!

No, kids don't analyze what they see the way adults do. The just absorb it like a SPONGE and file it away for future reference. The commercial is sexually suggestive. Whether the booty is square or round makes no difference. I am appalled that so many people think this is okay. I don't believe that commercials that showcase ladies underclothes are okay. I don't believe that commercials with the word "damn" or "hell" are okay. We believe ourselves to be a progressive nation. Unfortunately, not all progress is good. David P. said something about "(B)ible thumping morons" Since when am I a moron for teaching values and morals to my children? Last I heard, that was my job as a parent. Thanks to Tanya Y for the voice of reason.

Most kids are just going to think it's either funny (haha, girls with square butts!) or stupid (the commerical doesn't make much sense). I just saw it for the first time last night and was just annoyed. I like the song and I like Spongebob, but the two do not go together. Then Sir Mix-a-Lot himself shows up at the end... I wanted to smack the guy for allowing them to do that to his song. But hey, I guess he needs money again, so whatever. I don't watch much tv anyway, so it's not like I'll be seeing the commercial very often.
