Literacy. Is it a thing of the past?

More and more lately, I have been noticing a horrible trend among the young adults in our society.  This trend is illiteracy.  Now, let me begin by further explaining what, exactly, I mean when I use this term: illiteracy.  Its not a complete lack of the ability to read, write or speak, but the inability to do so effectively.  I can understand making the occasional spelling mistake or grammatical error - everyone (even I) flubs up once in a while, but this is getting out of hand!  I have never had a more difficult time reading posts on the internet . . . SERIOUSLY, they make NO sense!  Believe me, I am up on the abbreviations and made-up words in IM, and this is not what I'm talking about.  Everywhere I look, there are sentences out of order - if they exist at all, no punctuation, ALL CAPS (isn't that yelling/screaming?), mispellings ALL over the place, misuse of common words, use of non-existant words, and all sorts of other nonsensical hullabaloo - its PURE MADNESS, people!  Its not just on the internet, either.  I work with young adults who seem to have the same problem and I just don't get it.  Where are we, as a society failing these young people?  Who is letting them slip through the cracks?  My daughter starts Kindergarten this fall and while I will make damn sure she can communicate with her fellow English-speaking peers in a more than effective manner, I fear for her generation . . .  How does this happen?  Is it Laziness?  Who is responsible?  And how bad does this have to get before something is done?

I blame cell phone companies for promoting phones with irritatingly small, non-qwerty keyboards for text messaging. We need better typing technology... like laser keyboards.

I agree with Audiliz 100%. I can't read/understand some of these either. Does anyone know how to use the spell check on the computer before they hit send? Or at least look at what they wrote before sending?

Spelling is not a gift, it is one of the most basic principles of language. Now being a spelling bee champ; that takes talent. I agree with this post. Most people don't know and really don't care if they spell properly, use proper grammar, or use words out of context.

I think it's laziness. Everyone in the world texts and uses slang and most of those people are fluent in more than one language. It's our fault for accepting it and allowing our government to use money on everything under the sun but our children's education. Personally, I vote that anyone who uses the word "like" out of context one more time needs to be thrown in grammar jail!

    BTW, IT'S ACCEPTED NOT EXCEPTED!!!!!

It's one thing to use slang or not use capitals when necessary, because you can still mostly understand what the person is trying to communicate. I agree with the author. I have read some of these blogs by the younger generation and they just don't make sense. They are just rambling thoughts in random order and you also have to allow for spelling mistakes. By the time you finally figure out what they are trying to say, you are too tired to respond.

It drives me crazy! I cringe everytime I read a post that it horribly misspelled or grammatically incorrect. I agree that everyone makes mistakes. But there is a difference between a few mistakes and being uneducated. Also, kikid, for such a great writer, you had many spelling, punctuation, and capitialization errors. And if you had read the article, she was not talking about slang. She was talking about all the mistakes you made in your post!

I agree, the English language has gone to pot. I may not be the best speller or use grammer correctly, but at least I know that a lot is two words, not one. I think making the kids read and write more in school and at home is key! Take away their Playstations or whatever they're using now and have them read a book! There is no harm in it.

Faye 2. I agree, my baby sister uses the words "like" and "pissed" way to often, now if I hear her use those words as "fillers" I wack her. (She's 18 and should know better!)
