My Kid's Teacher is Being Laid Off

Yet our city is throwing a multimillion dollar parade ... what's wrong with this picture?

2002 Los Angeles Lakers Parade

Momlogic's Julie: I live in a city that's about to throw a $2 million parade for the Lakers. We're also bankrupt.

I got an e-mail from our school principal last night saying my daughter's teacher is not coming back next year due to budget cuts. To say I am devastated would be an understatement.

This is the best teacher I have ever encountered at my school or ANY school. She is an amazing kindergarten teacher. She has her own website for the class, and offers "kindercasts" where the kids can even sing the ABCs with her. She is at every after-school event and fundraiser. She is beyond patient with the kids. She sends home amazing ceramic projects and compiles a huge end-of-year book that encompasses everything the kids have done through the year. She gives 110%. In short, she is amazing.

But due to state budget cuts, the school is losing her. More than 27,000 preliminary pink slips have gone out to California teachers. Yet we're throwing a $2 million parade for the Lakers. Yes, the Lakers are paying half. Big whoop. They should pay for the whole thing. A million dollars to these players is like a hundred bucks to you or me. Let them split that cost among the team.

Or better yet, donate the million to the city and forget the damn parade! (After all, many fans RIOTED in the streets after the Lakers won the last game. This is who you are throwing the parade for.)

The mayor has faced so much criticism for the celebration, he is now soliciting private donations to pay for it. Why don't those private donors chip in for the salary of my daughter's kindergarten teacher while they're at it? Why don't they donate that money for something the city actually NEEDS -- versus a freaking parade?

Sometimes this world just seems unfair. This is one of those times.

Kobe, why don't you pay my daughter's teacher's salary next year? She deserves it. If you do -- I promise to throw you a parade right in front of the school. The 5-year-olds in my daughter's class will be the most grateful fans you've ever seen, on or off the court. That's a promise.

This is tragic. Notify the national media, write a letter to the President (or a Republican someone), make a BIG stink because this is an all too common situation and it stinks. And, you might want to contact other class parents and collect a cash going away gift for her. She may need the money as she gets her life back on track.

That is extremely unfortunate! This teacher obviously embodies want many educators strive to be and she will be a loss to the education system. Being a teacher myself I know how perilous many of our jobs are at this time and it is horrible when any wonderful teacher is let go.

LOL.. This is the reason why you should not live in California or any other blue state. If you want security then you should live in a state where they actually know how to govern money.

Look at the map and the statistics.. Red states are doing better than the national average.. Guess people wished they would have voted for Palin.. She actually saved the Alaskan state money and they actually gave money back to each person and she actually knows how to budget and holding up the law while doing it. That includes giving incentives for people to work not giving unemployment checks to actors who refuse to get a committed job.

GO Pelosi!.. Spend that money baby!

It is so sad. It makes me sick that in these times sports figures salaries are going up and up and up and those that WATCH the games and pay for tickets are the ones out of work and losing money.

I understand sports figures draw attention to the sports and bring in money so they should be adequately compensated. But, come on, this is a bit OTT! It's a bit outrageous.

I'm so sorry your teacher is losing her job. We're losing some good teachers here in Georgia too - for a variety of reasons.

the city actually spent very little on this parade, it would be inappropriate for the lakers to foot the bill, its like throwing your own birthday party for yourself. im very glad they threw it, having something to be happy about and celebrate in these times especially after hearing nothing but bad news for months and people complain is great! we needed something to lift our spirits, throwing this parade was the BEST decision, go lakers you deserve it!!!!!!!!!
