MySpace Victim's Mom Seeks Justice

Tina Meier talks to momlogic.

Last week, a federal judge tentatively threw out the convictions of Missouri mom Lori Drew, who had been charged with fraud in connection with a fake MySpace page targeting her 13-year-old neighbor, Megan Meier. Megan Meier later committed suicide.

Megan's mom, Tina Meier, talks to momlogic about this shocking ruling.

momlogic: When did you find out about the judge's decision, and what was your reaction?

Tina Meier: The decision came down on Thursday, July 2nd. I feel aggravation and disappointment. I truly feel that the message the judge is sending out is a bad one. It's stating that if we as individuals use the Internet and don't read the terms of service, we can still make a false profile, harass someone, impersonate someone, and do whatever we want ... and if something happens, we are not held liable because we didn't read the terms of service. This is a horrible message to be sending sexual predators, husbands, wives, exes, and anyone who wants to cause harm or get revenge on someone else. Now, what I am doing with the Megan Meier Foundation is asking anyone who disagrees with the judge's decision to please contact the judge's court clerk and let him know why you disagree. The judge's decision is not 100% until it's in writing. I am not sure when that will be, so I am asking people to write him as soon as possible. The AP did an article right after the decision and they did an online survey asking how many people agreed with the ruling. Over 90,000 people clicked on the survey and over 89% disagreed. These are people who use the Internet. We need to stand up and protect our children. This is one step towards asking the judge to do something positive and set a precedent.

ML: Where will you go from here?

Tina: I am fighting to let the judge know there are people out there who disagree with his ruling. If he doesn't read the letters or listen, then there is nothing more I can do, but we need to get our voices heard. The jury found Lori Drew guilty, but he threw out the decision and now she goes free. Right now, the decision is still tentative until it's in writing, which is again why I am asking people to write the judge as soon as possible.

I can't let this decision stop the course I am on. I am going to continue to get out there. There are two components. The first is legislative. There is a federal bill out there that has been proposed by Congresswoman Linda Sanchez in California. We need a law that will state if you use the Internet to harm or harass someone, you need to be held accountable -- just like when you drink and drive and kill an innocent family on the road, you need to be held responsible. On the federal level, it will cover everyone, and not just go state by state. The second component is to get into the schools and continue to talk and educate the kids, parents, educators, etc. We need kids to understand the effects this has on others, when they get into arguments or harass each other online. I want to show them real life stories of how people have taken their lives when this could have been prevented.

Do you think the judge's decision should be overruled? Comment below.

I remember this girls story, it's heartbreaking! I'm outraged and angry at the injustice. She should be convicted of murder.

My heart goes out to the Meier family and I sincerely hope that their pain will heal in time.

May Lori Drew rot in the seventh circle of hell while skunks piss on her head for eternity.

That's all I have to say about this.

first I would like to say that this is really a tragic thing that has happened and I'm going to pray or this woman who has lost her child. What I don't agree is that this sick neighbor should be charged with murder because she didn't kill her but she should be charged with aggravating this already sensitive teenager with apparent issues. Also I would like to know what was going on in Tina Meirs house before the young lady committed suicide.... Was the girl acting strange? Did she talk to her mother and explain to her what was going on with her? maybe then Tina could have helped her daughter to cope and deal with what was going on and just maybe I'm not sure she wouldn't have committed suicide. I do think the neighbor should spend some time in prison but I don't think she should be locked up for murder it was obvious though that this young lady had some serious issues.

If the Drew Witch created a Myspace account, she clicked the box that said that she had read and understood the terms and agreed to abide by them. Is that how she's not held responsible? By saying that she didn't read the terms? If so, that's a piss-poor defense and I'm surprised she was left off with it. Can people be let out of contracts that they've signed if they tell someone that they haven't read the fine print now, too?

I wouldn't say that she's exactly guilty of murder, but I definitely think she pushed this girl to kill herself - issues or no. What a miserable woman

completely agree with everything fizzy said. I don't really feel she should have been convicted of MURDER, a lesser felony charge would have sufficed. But she WAS convicted, and that conviction was overturned on a BS technicality. It's very sad. That terrible Drew woman should be punished. I liked someone's idea about a flogging. I'd go.

I agree that Lori Drew is an immature idiot...but I don't think she should be convicted of murder. If this poor girl suffered from emotional problems why in the world would her parents even allow her to have a Myspace account?! Myspace is just a haven for problems and her parents should have been monitoring her account daily!

Ok has anyone here actually read what she was charged with? She wasn't charged with murder of manslaughter nor was she convicted with causing anyone's death. She was charged with computer fraud and criminal conspiracy to use a computer to cause emotional distress. She couldn't have been charged with murder or manslaughter or any of that because the girl's death was labled a suicide not a homicide. The case was about using a computer and online social networking site to harrass someone as well as protecting children from online predators.

Are you kidding me people? Just because she had problems doesn't mean she would go over the edge an kill herself. Every teenager has problems... don't you remember? Lifes not always that great when your a teenager. She was a young child who was easily teased. Now Drew on the other hand was a GROWN WOMEN! She on the other hand knows what she's doing. I can't believe an adult could be so imature to go out of there way and make a fake myspace account an torture that little girl. If she had an issue she needs to stand up and go to the parent of the child. She may have not physically killed that child but she was an accompise in it too. She needs to be punished for harrasment, manslaughter, and for violating the myspace terms and conditions. Like one person said there's a box you have to check off saying you understand. If she didn't read them that's her stupidity and loss. Why would you check something if you didn't even read it? That's her fault. She should be punished and put in jail. Like another person said.. you drink and drive and kill someone, you harras someone and they kill them selfs. Same thing. You need to pay for your actions. It's funny how she can do all this f%&$%^ up things but she can't pay for her own actions. An I want to know who what in that judges right mind makes him think that that lady... or I should say coward should not be held accountable for what she did. I feel sorry for that little girls family. I thank god her mother is going full force on this, she is a very good mother and a very bave mother as well. Their family and friends are in my prayers.

Also I forgot to mention.. everyone keeps talking about the little girls issues and problems. She's a child everyone has problems even more when your a young child trying to survive threw middle school. That place is torture itself. Not stop thinking about her issues and problems and look at the drew witch. She's the one with more problems that the little girl. To go on the comp. and taunt this poor child REPEATEDLY is horrible. She's the one that has problems and needs the help. Once again this is soo sad.
