What was NOT studied is any affect between thimerosal and autism. "The study was not designed to address other rumored theories of autism's cause, such as thimerosal, the much-debated mercury-based preservative in some other vaccines." (Source)
Also of interest: the study that initially linked MMR (measles) vaccines to autism was done with 12 children. This new study was with 25 (it's more complicated than that; here's a more detailed explanation.)
I admit that I was unaware of the autism/vaccines controversy; I think it didn't really begin until my children were older. Now that I've been following it, it seems like there is a surprising lack of data on both sides. Why not do a study just on thimerosal, for example? Wouldn't that make more sense?

Report AbuseI don't think anyone wants to sponsor a study that could possibly link something like thimerosal. Then the drug manufacturers and government would have to admit responsibility. And, they'd have to invest a whole lot more money into finding an alternative preservative.
For now, unless more people get really angry about it, its just easier to sweep the problem under the rug.
My daughter is 9 and has never had one vaccine. Guess what? She's happy and healthy, her immune system is strong as it should be because it hasn't been interferred with nor had chemicals injected into her body.

Report AbuseI agree...more research certainly needs to be done on the topic. Personally, I don't believe vaccines cause autism. However, I do think it is a very real possibility that something in the vaccines (be that thimerosol or something else) may trigger the onset of autism in someone genetically predisposed to it. There is an excellent debate about the possible link between autism and vaccines at www.opposingviews.com/questions/are-autism-and-vaccines-linked Several experts from both sides debate the issue, and make some very interesting points on the topic!

Report AbuseMstrissMinx, you seem to completely miss the point. EVERYONE who hasn't been compromised by disease or cancer treatment has a strong immune system. But no matter how strong your daughter's immune system is, if she is exposed to measles or diptheria, she will get the disease. Worse still, she could easily spread it to other un-vaccinated children. Some of those children will be just like yours, un-vaccinated because of parental fear. But some of them CAN'T be vaccinated, and think how you would feel if your child gave a serious disease to a kid who already had cancer and couldn't take vaccinations, and it killed that other kid. Just think about that.

Report AbuseI have a child with autism and know it caused it. He was normal and advanced. How about this study that proves a connection but is totally ignored?

Report AbuseThey only investigated mercury. It is not the mercury. It is 3 vaccines in one that are so similar, that cause the immune system to crash.
