Parenting poll: Are your kids already talking about Halloween costumes?
editor
Halloween is more than a
month away but the costume talk is frequent between my sons.
They're likely to have fifty ideas up until a week before the big
day, but so far Darth Vader is a strong contender (never mind that
they've never seen Star Wars). And if my oldest decides to stick
with the man of gloom for his costume, he'll be one of about 10
kids at his school donning the same attire.
Other costumes they've discussed:
James the Red Engine (from Thomas the Tank Engine),
Clone Troopers,
Buzz Lightyear,
Willy Wonka (the Gene Wilder version) and a regular,
ole' pirate.
Personally, I'm pulling for one of them to be Willy Wonka. But I
think Darth Vader will win.
Are your kids already talking about Halloween costumes?
And what do they want to be?

We have a rule in our house that Halloween cannot be discussed until after August. Otherwise my kids would hound me all throughout year and have me totally stressed out by the time the holiday got here.
So, as of September 1st I am on the lookout this year for Frankenstein, Mrs Frankenstein and Igor. I'm hoping with the Igor movie out this Friday that I'll be able to find a store-bought costume and knock out that out right away.
Every year I try to get my kids to be The Cat in The Hat (Kid2's favorite books/movies) and Thing1 and Thing2, but my kids just won't humor me.

My son (5) wants to be a power ranger like his friends in Kindergarten, but I am trying to get him to be a knight. I already saw the costume at walmart, but I'm just not sure I can win this one.

LOL my son (5) is the exact same way about Darth Vador, ever since the McD toys and the cartoon just came out. Halloween is my son's favorite time of year. He likes scary stuff. CS

Yup! We always buy the kids' costumes right before Labor Day, 'cause the absolute best ones are always out a month before Halloween. Right now, our son is just under 4, so he doesn't really get to pick. We're sticking to cuddly, cute animal costumes 'cause soon enough he won't let me dress him up like this, so taking advantage now! Last year was a spider, the year before a lion, and the first year was a bumble bee. He'll be a giraffe this year.

My house is already in Halloween mode...My 4 year old has his Oriental Trading magazine with him every night. He sleeps with it...Every day after school he wants to know if I picked up Halloween decorations. He loves it..When he says goodnight he also says Happy Halloween...He is undecided if he wants to be a Transformer or a ghost....Decisions....decisions...My 1 and a hlaf year old will be Tigger....None of us can wait.....

Already TALKING about them? Dude (or dudette), we've already GOT them! The costume center and Target sell out quick, then God forbid they might be out of the toy bullwhips my son needs for Indy Jones, and I for one can do without visiting more than one Costume SuperCenter per year! And my ten-year-old daughter wants to be the Grim Reaper - should I be expecting a Goth puberty? Maybe I should hide that "Beetlejuice" DVD....

I think setting a rule about not talking about Halloween is very odd, but...to each their own. In my family, Halloween costumes is something we work on all year! I guess that's because we go all out. My brother is going as Doc Ock (from Spider-Man), and at this point, he has it down to wear he can control the tentacles! I think shutting your kids' imagination out on something like that all year is just wrong. If you actually allow yourself longer than 2 months to get the costumes together, you might not stress as much. :)
