Posting Photos of Your Children

The discussion about Mom Blogging & Kathie Lee Gifford is making me wonder how blogging moms censor themselves on what pictures to post online and what to write about their children, while protecting their privacy on the Web.

We live in Islamabad, but our families and friends are in the United States, Philippines, Thailand, and other parts of the world. The best way to keep our loved ones updated about our lives is to maintain blogs and post photos online, in addition to e-mail. I always thought that I was being careful posting pictures of our baby on a private album of a paid account. Imagine my surprise when one particular photo of our baby -- who was then 2-3 months old, lying naked on his tummy right after his bath (see above photo) -- was taken offline because it was deemed "offensive." (I used PhotoShop to make the photo black & white and to add a leaf over the "offending part" so as not to offend the people in Shine.)

At first I was annoyed, even insulted, and thought about canceling my subscription -- it was after all a private album and so many pictures of a baby's bottom proliferate on the Web and are even sold as postcards. But I lightened up, and re-posted the photo in another site, one that is password-protected.

Here are two excellent websites by professional photographers, of baby and children photography. I love their work and style, and will continue to use them as inspiration in taking pictures of my baby.

I was like you for a long time but have recently deleted my blog and made all my images private.

I am surprised that you had to pay subscription for your private photos.

I use picasa, it has option to make your album unlisted.Flickr has option of making it availalbe only to family and friends.

When you hear stories of child abuse and everyhing that can happen on the net.Its better not to get attention of any such person. You do not know whose online.

I know almost every other mom is blogging these days but I am glad I made my children's photos and blog private.

You've made some interesting points. Thank you for sharing. And love the links!!!

My fave photo of my baby son, now 25, is a photo of him walking but still diaper-age, nude wearing his daddy's boots and cowboy hat. It's a 3/4 full body portrait, with a background banked in blooming impatiens and his bottom is showing. It's a keeper and I snapped it.

I did worry a bit about having it blown up to an 11x14. How did I know other copies weren't being made or how they might be distributed? Sad world we live in.
