Presidential reading? Harry Potter and Where the Wild Things Are

After attending parent-teacher conferences for daughters Sasha and Malia at Sidwell Friends School, President Obama made a surprise visit to Viers Mill Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD. Catching about 150 third- and fifth-graders in the middle of lunch, he told them, '"What I'm going to do is, I'm just going to come around, I'm going to shake people's hands. I'm going to say 'hi' to folks. And you guys can tell me what you've been reading, all right?"

Kid favorites included Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid and, of course, the ever-popular Goosebumps series.

So what's Obama reading? Sources say Gordon Goldstein’s Lessons in Disaster, a book about  the American government's lack of vision in the lead up to the Vietnam conflict. But during the school visit today, Obama talked about a book that more third-and fifth graders could relate to.

"Malia and I read the Harry Potter books. We thought those were pretty good," he said. He also went on to recommend Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things, and said that the Spike Jonze movie based on the book was "worth seeing."

School superintendent Jerry D. Weast was impressed.

"He knew their books," Weast said. "He was able to relate to their books and, without any kind of hesitation, respond to their questions."

What did the kids think of the day? Maya, an eight-year-old, had a strong opinion with an equally strong qualifier: "This is the best day of my life -- in school."

...as long as he's not reading "My Pet Goat," I think we'll be O.K.

It kinda helps that he has kids their age... if he had kids in their late teens or older he most likely wouldn't know what they (that age group) are reading today...

This is really cool. Those kids won't ever forget that day the president of the United States visited their cafeteria. I love that he does things like this.

All presidents have done, and do things like this... it's nothing new.

My God people act like he's parted the red sea or something...

He visited a school.... just like every other past president has...

And just like every president they did a story on it. People hate Obama more than they love America. It's really quite sad.

"My Pet Goat" is the book that George Bush was reading to a group of kids as the 9/11 attacks were taking place.

"My pet goat" was the riveting book that Ex-President Bush Jr. was reading during the flooding of New Orleans when a little storm called Katrina devastated the region. It was apparently so good that he had to finish it before issuing any orders to come to the aid of the storm victims.

No. It was the book he was reading while terrorist piloted planes slammed into the World Trade Center.
