Punishing Skinny Kids!

My son came home the other day from school complaining about the snack machines in his school.  I can usually tell when he is really upset or just venting but on this day I couldn't really decide......so I just said "what are you talking about" and that was enough to get him really rolling.  He asked me, "Mom I don't know why the school has to take out all of the good snacks out of the machine cause a few fat kids can't control what they eat!"  He said why can't they just attach a scale to the snack machine and if the kid is overweight then they can only select healthy stuff like apples or oranges and if the kid isn't overweight they can get whatever they want.  I started to go on and explain why that wouldn't work but all of a sudden I was blank, couldn't come up with a response that satisfied myself much less 1 that would satisify a teenager.  I know the issue of child obesity is a serious one and I agree that something should be done but when my son poised this question I have to say I was clueless. Hard to argue with his logic.  Other than the embarrassment issue of a child that is overweight standing on a snack scale and only getting an healthy option for a snack what would be the harm in that?

Simply because we now live in a society where we must punish everyone for the few that can't take responsibility for their actions...

I think encouraging healthy eating is always a good idea, but your son is right. If a healthy child wants the occasional snack indulgence, they should be allowed to have it. The only problem with his proposal is that overweight kids would very quickly find an average or underweight friend to stand on the scale for them to buy their unhealthy snacks.

The harm is that no kids, whether they are skinny or fat, needs to be eating unhealthy snacks. Your kid should learn to eat real food, not processed crap chock full of empty calories, high fructose corn syrup, and chemicals.

You seriously want your child to have unlimited access to food like that as long as they stay skinny?

How about because thin doesn't automatically mean healthy? If a kid is eating junk regularly and still doesn't gain weight--he's still eating junk! Thin people may not have all of the risk factors as heavier people, but poor food choices can still hurt their health. Childhood obesity may have had alot to do spurring on the movement to take unhealthy snacks out of schools, but the idea is to improve the overall health of all of the students, not just the overweight kids. Should thin kids also be exempt from PE?

If you feel your son is healthy and a few snacks won't hurt him, buy a few of his favorite treats that he can take to school with him--it'll be much cheaper than what he's spending on the vending machine anyway.

Not to mention that putting machines in the school to point out which kids are overwieght and which are not--well, the school officials might as well beat the obese kids up themselves.

They also want to PREVENT skinny kids from becoming FAT.

Ridiculous I know but I've seen more over-weight teachers then I have students and they get soda machines and fatty snack machines along with other fatty snacks in the teacher lounge.

I feel it's a great way to teach kids how to eat healthier. I personally don't think it's about punishing anyone. Junk food is junk food that equals unhealthy eating patterns. There are so many natural foods and snacks I couldn't imagine why they still have vending machines selling unhealthy snacks?

The school systems today are under fire from all directions to teach the children way too much. It is no longer reading, writing and arithmetic; academics. Now it is social skills, nutrition, sex education, and nontraditional marriage. It used to be that a teacher could hug a child; don't you dare hug a child today or you will be labeled a child molester by someone. No one group is being punished by any one act but rather it is the old addage "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." If you feel strongly about something speak out, join a group and try to make change. That is the AMERICAN way.

You have every right to send your child to school with a lunch bag full of junk food if you so choose. But, the school is not going to provide these things any more so they can't be sued by some group saying the school system isn't doing it's job.

I was and still am one of those people who can eat all day and not gain weight. Just bring the snacks from home.

No kid, overweight or thin should be eating that sugary processed crap. You should be glad they removed it from the machines.

I was a skinny kid who ate junk all the time. Nobody thought to question my junk food habits because I was so skinny. But I had trouble walking up the stairs, I did not work out or play sports on a regular basis. I was very unhealthy at 110lbs in high school. There are many that were like me. Many who did not have parents offer apples as snacks or bananas or kiwi fruit or carrot sticks. I could eat whatever I wanted. I developed an addiction to junk food that I still struggle with everyday. School is just not the place for those types of snacks or soda. If the kid can have those things, they can have them at home. It is important to teach all kids how to eat healthy and to exercise.

Now, after three pregnancies I have lost that great metabolism and am still trying to learn how to eat right and avoid the addictions of sugar and junk food and pop. It is hard to get into a work out routine, not only because of my kids, but because I never exercised on a normal basis earlier in my life. This fate lies ahead for many unhealthy skinny kids. Do not think that only overweight people are unhealthy. In school, healthy habits for life should be taught to everyone! So, tell your child that this is not a punishment, it is to teach all children what kind of snacks are appropriate on a daily basis. The junk food in vending machines should never be an everyday thing for anyone.
