Sesame Street's Bert Pinched My Sister

user

Sesame Street. Need I say more? The pioneer of all educational kid's television shows. It debuted in 1969. According to Wikipedia, an estimated 77 million Americans watched the show as children. Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Grover and Cookie Monster were the funny characters that we loved.

Thanks to Gund, your child's favorite Sesame Street characters are interactive and cuddly, even on the inside. These colorful puppets remind us that Sesame Street is still a favorite, even in the days of iPod and Wii.

On a personal note, I'm not a huge fan of Sesame Street. I remember watching it as a kid, but not really loving it. I was more of an Electric Company kid. "Hey, you guys!"

However; my younger sister was a big fan of Sesame Street. On her 8th birthday she got the big Bert puppet. See photo. Yep, he only had four fingers. And there wasn't anything cuddly about him. In fact, even as kids we thought he was creepy.

Anyway, Bert sat right beside my sister's bed at night until he got a bit too handsy. My sisters swears he pinched her on the butt. She says she woke up and he was floating above her (he didn't have feet!) and he pinched her. In fact, if you asked her about it today - and she's in her 30s - she'd still tell the same story. No, she's not delusional or drunk. She's just a normal adult with a funny story to tell about her creepy puppet. We laugh about it all of the time. It's a family classic.

Needless to say, Bert lived in a box for the rest of his days in our home. Poor guy, he never really had a chance. So what kind of funny, yet odd, childhood memories do you have about your toys? Share with MommyQ!

I got a dollhouse for Christmas when I was about 5 years old. It had furniture and people in it. I remember that the first time i saw it the toilet was in the kitchen (because my brother had got to it before I did) and I thought it was so funny. Wow... Haven't thought about that in years!

I had a ton of Barbie dolls when I was little, but at one point they were slowly vanishing, one by one. I told my mom but she didn't believe me and said I had probably forgotten where I put them, but I KNEW they were going MIA. When the crisis reached it's peak, I was probably down by about 7 or 8 Barbies so I went on a house-wide search & rescue mission. When my brother was gone, I searched his room and - big surprise - found the poor missing Barbies under his bed! NAKED! I took then back but never told him about it. I can only assume he figured it out eventually!! lol :)

I had a Farah Fawcett Barbie that looked like a man in drag. She had to be the man because I never got a Ken.

My mom and dad teased me one year when I was about seven, saying that all I was getting was 'socks, blocks, and rocks'. Sure enough, on Christmas Day I opened my first gift to discover some old worn socks, blocks, and some rocks from the driveway. I cried like a baby until they let me open my other 'real' gifts. I don't think it affected me, (at least I hope not) but I learned many valuable parenting skills from my parents...mainly how NOT to act towards my own kids.

When I was about 4, I had a Smurf Car. It had no engine, was just a riding toy. I thought it was the coolest thing every. My older brother and his friends spray-painted it black and rode it down this huge hill. It crashed into a gravel pile at the bottom and broke into pieces. I guess that isn't really funny, but damn, I loved my Smurf Car.

When I was about 6 (44yrs ago!) I asked Santa for this toy washing machine - it was battery operated, and you could put your doll clothes in, close the door (front loader) and watch as it would simulate the whole wash/rinse/spin cycle. well, when it went into spin mode, the machine made a loud noise, and jumped a little! Needless to say, I was terrified of the stupid thing! I hid it in the back of my closet, and barricaded it with other toys so that I wouldn't even see it!

To this day, every Christmas there someone in my family will bring this up, and we all have a good laugh about it!

Maybe this is why I hate doing laundry!

When I was 2, I got a stuffed duck from my grandparents, and it quacked "Old McDonald". It scared the crap outta me, and I hid behind a chair from it, because it was in the center of the room. I would not go back into the room for hours, cause I truly believed the duck was going to eat me. Now, my mom loves showing my boyfriend the baby video she took of all this.
